Babies born~August 1st-15th 2009 #3

Hi everyone,

thanks for your well wishes for christening etc. It really was great :) Work has picked up!!!!!!! yay! Many of you know this was a big stress for me lately. But it looks like I won't have to go back to casino (prev job) and can now do what I studied for - teaching! I worked two days this week and have 2.5 days booked in next week (I am available for 3 days a week, so this is great!). Relief teaching pays well, so don't have to do as much which is great = more time with Eli!. I noticed he is being much more clingy, I think cause I have been at work, he is with my mum (who he loves very much) on mon & Wed and DH on Tues, but he still misses his mumma - I miss him too - but hey...got to work!
He is still mad on the boob and has been feeding more since I have been at work, which is making pumping my supply for frozen milk difficult. Nevermind I shall persevre.... He is loving food and his second top tooth has just made it through today - so cute. He had his second haircut today and looks sooooo grown up! My goodness, baby boy where did you go? 6 years to get you and you are already so grown up!:shakehead:

Trish - I bet Alana is going to get a lot of them at once ;)

Willow - Elis is still the same too :hug: :hug:. I put him down around 8:30 then he wakes around 12 and 4 for a feed. From 12 onwards he co-sleeps. It is the only way I can get enough rest. Plus I must admit since being at work I love being close to him at night. I miss him so.... would be nice if he slept more.....I just keep saying it won't last forever.... right? ;) Hope it gets better soon hun.

Issy - we are the same here with getting dresson :lol: soooo annoying. The boys looked so cute playing in the portacot the other day... we are so lucky!

Chezel - hope you guys have a great night tonight. and how cute mini dracula!

misty - time will tell you when it is time for another. I know I feel the same as you, not ready yet, but not ready for Eli to be the only one either! We are thinking TTC next year...but who knows maybe a bit later? ahhh it is a tricky one.

Tippytoes - I know, we are so very lucky to share this time together, watching and enjoying our little ones growing up together, after supporting eachother through ttc for so many years. Cheezlemonster - It seems to be like that doesnt it? The unpredicatable nights? Im hoping it sorts itself out soon. Sleep training is going great, Lochie slept from 7pm till 6am this morning, so thats a really positive start and result from our first few nights if sleep training. Just got to keep everything consistent now, until he gets the hang of it!

Misty - Im the same. I couldnt imagine not being pg again. I am looking forward to doing it again and welcoming the last little bundle of joy into our family. Im keen to wait, and so was DH....LAST WEEK!!!!! Now, he has had a change of heart and wants to see how things pan out, not minding if we have another one soon. I think he is pretty worried about me going on any kind of contraception again, after finding it so difficult for us to fall pg a 2nd time, and waiting so long for my body to get back to normal. I dont know....im very hesitant about doing it all again so soon. I would like to wait another year...AT LEAST! Will have to think about it!!!!!!!!

Trish - thankyou for your lovely words of praise about bf'ing. I really appreciate it! Im know 8 months is great, and im grateful we got this far considering it has been a bit of a bumpy journey! He is only having bottles now, and as the days pass, im feeling more and more at ease with it. He is still my happy little fella, so I have to be thankful for that! Oh and goodluck with sorting out plans for your trip. Must be difficult with a baby who dislikes the car. Lochie was starting to hate it too, but we turned the seat around at 6 months, and since then he has been good. He wasnt quite the recommended weight, but I decided to do it anyway. Im glad I did!

Issy - Glad to hear the sleep training is going well. We had a much better night last night with only one wake up so I'm hoping that means the latest lot of teeth are sorted. I am going to wait a few nights to see how he goes and if he seems back to normalt hen I am *hoping* to work up the courage to stop feeding overnight and resettling instead. I've been saying that for weeks though! :lol:

As for ttc, we won't be having anymore. I've been prg 4 times in the last 5 years and I kinda think that's enough for me! When D was about 3-7 months old I really felt like I could have another but over the last few months I realise I'm very content with the 3 children we have and considering the issues we've had ttc, I don't want to push my luck.

Well, update on sleep training....7pm till 7am for our little pumpkin here last night! He stirred at 3:30am, but I popped the dummy in and he continued sleeping! Wowzers...its working!!!!!!

awww nice one issy! :clap: Gee, my darling god-son is such a good little boy! ... Now can he teach his god-brother the same! ;) Eli slept pretty well, still waking at 12 and 4ish for a feed, but as he is in with us, I can pretty much sleep through YAY!. Must get ready for work tomorrow. House is a tip and soooo much washing.... hopefully BBL!

Well our first serious attempt at resettling instead of feeding was a freaking DISASTER. Fed him before I went to bed, then he woke at about 1am fed him but then he woke again at about 3.20am - tried to resettle and got him back to sleep once only to have him wake again 10 mins later. He wailed for about an hour and a half all up. At 4.30am I cracked it and fed him and he slept till 7.30am when I had to wake him for breakfast.

Oh Willow, Im sure it will get easier. Lochie was pretty bad at first too, kept waking every hour to feed, and I caved so many times. But I knew I had to do something cause he was starting to get pretty bad, and I knew he didnt need the feed in the night, and was only using it to resettle. You'll get there, but just make sure you do it in your own time when you are both feeling up to it....its not easy!

Can we join the 'bad sleepers club'? :(

We used CC for DD from 6 mths, she was and has been a good sleeper ever since.
DS1 we were unable to use CC for various reasons (including him actually getting worse when we tried) - he still is a terrible sleeper. Have given up with him...he is 2.5yrs old and I cann't see how anything will improve there.

Now Baz is showing signs of becoming just as bad as his big brother. :( He will only sleep when held, will not self settle, wants to be fed everytime he wakes and will not settle until he is (even though he isn't actually hungery). I am at a loss as to what to do.

I think because of all the problems we ran into trying EVERYTHING with DS1, I am hestitant to do anything with baz, just in case it backfires and makes him worse (like it did with DS1). I don't know where to start. Should I just leave him to cry? If so how long for? etc etc

Everyone seems to suggest sleep school. Sounds like a fabulous miracle worker, the way everyone talks about it. The problem is that it just isn't practical. I have three kids to look after, not just one baby. I don't have the time for it. And I am really not comfortable inviting anyone into my house to help 'train' him, even if we had the money.

The biggest problem seems to be that we have a small house, with the bedrooms right across from each other. This means everytime Baz wakes up screaming, DS1 gets woken up, or vice versa.

And truthfully Baz isn't That bad yet, I am just terrified he is going to be as bad as his brother. Once bitten, twice shy....

Then again maybe it's just teething causing the bad sleeping atm????

Willow - More hugs to my friend :hug:. Sorry it didn't go well last night. Just remember that the first night is usually the worst and tends to get a little bit better each night. You just have to keep at it (but only if you're up for it :hug:).

Tippytoes - I hear you on the washing! DH took the boys away for the weekend and brought home a mountain of dirty clothes for me, how nice :rolleyes:.

issy - Woohoo on Lochie sleeping well!!!

CheezelMonster - LOL @ mini-Dracula! My DS1 got his top side teeth first too, I was worried he wouldn't get the middle ones for a while :lol:. AFU - We finally have a tooth! Alana had a couple of dodgy nights and then yesterday I felt a little sharp tooth that has cut through. It's one of her bottom teeth. I wonder if the others will be far off? She's still not interested in drinking water from a cup, she'll have a tiny sip if I offer it to her, but she doesn't want to hold it or drink it herself. I guess she will eventually!

Well I'd better go and take the mountain of washing off the line and bring it inside *sigh*.

Eli wakes up around twice a night and I feed him to sleep both times...I can sleep and he settles better. Just keep swimming ..... just keep swimming (in Dory voice!).

AFU - had school today and boobs were sooooo ready for a drain after :lol: I got some good milk pumped for the freezer though so that was great! Eli is gorgeous and I so look forward to coming home to him after work....glad I am not working everyday though..must dash.... :grouphug:

Moo is now cruising furniture! Caught him this arvo going from the couch to the play pen! As I said, would like to stop feeding him overnight. But really putting it off for some reason! It's usually only once, sometimes twice but am really over it! Especially seeing he doesn't NEED it & will go all night now & again.

I honestly don't mind feeding him once overnight but twice or more...I'm just over it.

I was just looking at the sleep guide from Ngala (sleep school in WA) and they actually say that babies up to 12 months may sleep through but they also may feed 4-6 hourly overnight. So maybe our babies are just doing very normal stuff :dunno:

I go from wanting to get him to sleep through to just thinking it's too hard and going with the flow.

Misty - I can relate 100%. My DD was a good sleeper, similar to D in that they learnt to self settle very early (D has actually self settled pretty much from birth, so I got lucky in that respect). We did occasionally do what I call responsive settling which is listening to bubs cry and going in and comforting accordingly. I wouldn't say we did full on CC but it worked and she was sleeping through every night, 12-13 hours solid by about 7-8 months. I didn't know how good I had it.

DS1 was a shocker. He had difficulty sleeping from birth. He'd have good stretches where he would self settle and sleep OK at night but then he'd regress again. At 10 months I hit rock bottom, I was just exhausted so we took him to sleep school. It was one of the hardest things I've ever done, but it worked. He has been a fantastic sleeper ever since. He started sleeping through at sleep school and we never looked back. He is now 2.5 and we very, very rarely have to get up to him during the night and if so, it's usually because he is sick.

Having said all that, I would have to be utterly desperate to do it again.

I just wonder where we went wrong, he was such a fantastic sleeper when he was a little baby but over the last 5-6 months has gotten worse and worse :wall:

Willow - I don't think you went wrong at all.... they are just babies.... I think :D. Well, at least that is what I am telling myself!

Chezel - thanks for congrats on teaching. It really is a big relief (relief teaching is a relief! :lol::lol::lol:) Also, you call them toothy pegs aswell! I thought my family wrer the only ones!

Been a bit slack about posting in here lately. Sorry to hear about all the bubs whose sleep have gone a bit pear-shaped. We had a rough patch for a few weeks when Orla started crawling but fingers crossed we're back to 'normal' (which is 2-3 feeds overnight so I do want to cut back on this eventually).

Apart from being back at uni on saturdays (love it! love it!) I've been flat out inspecting and applying for child care places for Orla as it's now even more important that I go back to work part-time: DP's contract is not going to be renewed in September (he was hired to fill in a maternity leave) so he's using this as his big chance to break out on his own (with a business partner) and start their own business. Scary stuff! I feel guilty making him wait til I finish my new degree (which looks like it'll be another 3.5 years part-time) to turn his dream into reality but financially it's only going to work if I go back to work. Still, I'm actually quite excited about it for him......plus having him at working from home (probably at night cos he's a night owl!) means he can help out with child care. He's loving 'daddy daycare' on saturdays and I can see Orla's bond with him developing so well in just the last few weeks :)
Anyone else had experience starting thier own business while they had babies? Any advice?

Sleeping is going well over here, although last night, lochie went to bed at 6:40pm, cause I couldnt keep him awake any longer, and refused dinner (taking him to the dr today, we think he was tonsilitis!). Because he didnt have dinner and isnt well, I decided to go to him everytime he cried out last night (obviously!) and feed him. He woke at 2am, fed and slept till 5:30am, and was up and ready to play!!!! Early morning for us....but cant blame him after going to bed at 6:40pm.

Right, Im in need of baby food inspiration over here, so lets share our recipes!

New favourite for Lochie:
Veg and veg mash:
1 potato - boiled and mashed
A handfull of pumpkin - boiled and mashed
1/4 teaspoon of vegemite
1 tablespoon of cheddar cheese

Issy - I asked about this a while ago but didn't get much response! LOL. I'll go next:

I just call this savoury mince & veg:

500g lean beef mince
1/2 c frozen baby peas
1/2 c corn kernels
1 zuchini grated
1 carrot grated
1 sachet tomato paste
1 tin chopped tomatoes
gravy powder (I just usually mix some up in some water and add it as needed if it doesn't thicken up enough)
2c steamed white/brown rice.

You can add whatever veg in whatever quantities you like, this is just roughly what I usually use.

I just brown the mince, add the vegies, tomato paste and gravy mix and let it simmer until the sauce thickens. While this is cooking I steam the rice in the microwave. Add the rice and stir it through. He LOVES this and in these quantities a batch usually makes up about 10 meals so I freeze them.

Not much happening here. Have given up on the sleep thing and decided that it's easier just to feed the boy and everyone be back in bed asleep 10 mins later than it is to push to resettle him in the hope it will mean he sleeps through. I am more rested this way than being up for an hour at at time trying to resettle. That's the path I've chosen for now. I can't complain too much because I'm generally only up to him once or twice a night. It's hard though, even DS1 who was a shocking sleeper in comparison started sleeping through at 10 months (but that was only after we went to sleep school). I'll survive. He is my last baby and I've hopefully only got a few more months of sleep deprivation ahead of me...EVER! LOL. It's crazy though, even though he is waking at night, I cannot in all honesty say he is a 'bad' sleeper. He self settles beautifully, I've NEVER had an issue settling him off to sleep and he is a dream baby during the day, always has been. Ah well, can't have it all!

I will try and get on tomorrow at some stage. Our weekend is very busy - we have a wedding on Saturday (have been expressing like crazy, feel like a dairy cow!) and Mother's Day and my bday on Sunday. But if I don't...

AFU- Sleep has been going well, he has slept through the night for 3 nights in a row, although he is waking between 5:30 and 6am each morning ready to party which is tiring, but im still happy with progress. 7pm bedtime is working well.

one of our faves (actually most of our favs) are from womens weekly happy baby cookbook. try this one

100g of chicken chopped roughly
310ml of water
1/2 cup of corn
1 tablespoon of risoni

1. combine all ingredients into pot
2. bring to the boil and simmer for about 10 minutes or until chicken is cooked and risoni is soft
3. blend with hand mixer (I only do a couple of pulses so it is more rough)

It is delicious and freezes really well. I usually double all portions so I can freeze more.

Eli has also been enjoying scrambled eggs and baby yoghurt (vaalia)

Yep, Baz either gets what we are eating, or if it is something too spicy, or junk food (ie, KFC) he will get tin baby food. It works well for us, because I don't have the time nor patience to prepare seperate meals. Home made rissotto is a favourite with all the kids, as is macaroni and spagetti Bol.

We do a bit of both. During the day he eats whatever we're eating and at night if it's something he can have then he has the same as us.

The recipe I posted is for the nights he eats before us or if we're having something he can't have. I like to have home cooked meals for him rather than tinned stuff so I make up big batches and freeze it. This recipe is actually just a variation of the sheppherd's pie that I make - he eats that too.

Have to admit that I'm pretty lazy and use commercial food most of the time. But when I do make an effort its usually left over meat and veg and mash it up. I will often put a bit of commercial puree in to soften it a bit. She seems to like it. Like Rach's chicken recipe. Will be trying that.

Nothing much happening here. Was up 4 times with M overnight! When DH got up in the morning he took both the kids and I slept in for hours. Hoping to have a sleep in tomorrow too!

Happy Mother's Day everyone. Had a pretty good day. M slept the entire night (or at least didn't need me to get up to her) so I had a good night sleep. I scored vouchers for a facial and pedicure and artwork from the kids done at daycare.

Not much happening with us. M is crawling like she's been doing it all her life. She might have started later than L but I reckon she'll walk before he does.

We done the Mothers Day Classic today, had a really good day. :)
Unfortunately, we realised this afternoon that Baz had gotten sunburnt - so now I feel like a rotten mummy. :(

Everything keeps on flittering between being absolutely fabulous and absolutely terrible for myself at the moment. For everything that goes right, something else seems to go wrong. :shakehead: So I never know whether I should be happy or upset. Oh well, at least it's not all crap.

I hope everyone had a lovely Mother's Day! I had a busy day, I went out for brekky with my little family (to Maccas LOL), then had lunch at MIL's then visited my Mum. Alana was over it by the end of the day the poor thing. She is going well though, she's almost at cruising stage now which is scaring me! She's very happy and chatty. She tries to copy sounds that we make. She can say "Dad", "Nan"," Bub", " 'ello" (while waving heehee) and "Yes", but she still can't say Mum :doh:. I can't believe how fast she is growing up, our babies will all be turning one before we know it :o.

I have had a quick browse over the thread - we are quite the chatterboxes aren't we. It's great to have the support of other Mum's with babies of same age. I have a lot to catch up on! I hope that you all had a lovely Mother's Day. Miss Z and I are still at my parents place in Queensland - 4 wks this weekend, time flies huh. I don't want to go back home but will probably have to go back in 2.5wks time.

Yaay to all the clever babies reaching so many developmental milestones. Crawling, standing, chatting - just amazing isn't it. The night we flew out we landed for our first stop and she started saying "dad dad dad" couldn't believe it. That was adding to her bub, mum (and recognising that I'm mum), la and luv - I was trying hard with Love so she could say it to anyone and it would be cute. She is also saying nan and what we think is an interpretation of grand dad and woof woof. When she is hungry or wants more/different food she kind of cups her hands and sweeps them towards her saying meh meh meh haha it's soo cute.

The day after we arrived she crawled just twice. But the following day she was off and hasn't looked back. She is pulling up on things - only if she can get a good grip. Standing on all fours (with arms and legs extended) while playing over things is her latest favourite. Nappy time is getting harder and harder to keep her in position.

Teeth are being a nightmare and had her to the local hospital the other night as temps of 38.5 even with panadol were persisting. They gave us a script for antibiotics to fill only if she got a productive cough, which she has :( It's horrible when they're trying to cough up so much mucous and her tonsils are red. I told her there was no need to be generous and share with me but she refused and insisted that mum be sick too. Nappy rash is horrid, I'm guessing because of all the mucous, antibiotics, panadol and teeth??

Ellee - Miss Z is quite the chatterbox. M only says dada and not even all that often. She makes heaps of noise but none of it recognisable. One cute thing M does is copy the dogs barking. When they bark she makes a noise too. Our dogs bark a lot LOL.

Think we have more teeth coming through. There's a white spot on her lower gum. Also a lot of ear pulling and restless sleep!

Sorry I havent had time to read through the latest posts, so im afraid this is just an 'us' update, ill get around to reading them later, when lochie is asleep (im currently waiting for his lunch to cool down - lentil and cheesy bake...YUM!)

Anyway, we have baby sleeping through...YAY! He has done it for almost 2 weeks now, so we are stocked! He goes to bed at 7pm (seems to be the trick!) and wakes at 6am (yes, very early, but we get heaps done if we get up at this time!). Its amazing! The new routine is working wonderfully, im so happy. Of course, I know things can change so quickly with little ones, and im almost certain there are new teeth about to appear, so I dare say we have a few restless nights ahead, but thats cool, thats babies!

I have been a bit unwell lately, and am very tired because of it. Unfortunately, as you would all know, there is no rest when you have young children. Oh well, I seem to be on the mend, just exhausted is all.

Had the afternoon off because M was sent home with a runny nappy. She hasn't had a dirty nappy since so I don't think there was anything wrong with her. I can appreciate that they need to control infections but sometimes I wonder if they do overreact. DS was sent home on Monday with vomitting so there is something going around.

Nothing much happening. M is crawling really quickly and pulling herself up on everything. There have been a few seconds of solo standing.

To all those who are sick and/or have sick babies/children....GET WELL SOON!!!! We have not escaped the illnesses over here, Lochie is sick with temps, runny nose, bright red cheeks (teething) etc etc. Im sure another tooth is about to appear at any moment.

Lochie is now standing on his own! Mum caught him standing (without leaning on or touching the window) at the back window today holding a toy in each hand. She reckons he did it for about 1min. Then my Dad called out, 'hey look at this, he's standing on his own!'. I looked around and sure enough he was standing next to the coffee table with a toy in each hand again...just standing there, looking around. I managed to catch that one, after being at work all day. Yes, I started teaching today, my first time ever! Just relieving for now, but it felt great!!!!! Im working again tomorrow. So, thats our 'developmental' news for the week. Im sure he'll be walking in no time at all....gosh i dont think im ready for that yet! Apart from that, he's off his food, only eats brekky at the moment, but has his 4 bottles. Im going to give him a top up feed before I go to bed tonight, because he didnt eat today. Sleeping is still going great, bed at 7pm up at 6:30am (although this morning was 5:30am!) Sometimes I have to go in at around 2am to pop the dummy in, but then he's back to sleep till morn. Not sure if this will continue tonight, just cause he is so unwell, and hasnt eaten. Poor little fella!

Hello everyone,

Sorry I've been so slack but have had a terrible time with Moo lately! His sleep has just gone downhill & every night is worse than the one before. I don't know if its teething, separation anxiety or just a phase he's going through - he just screams & cries through the night. I'm up 3 or 4 times each night with him for up to an hour each time! Feeding doesn't calm him down , I mean it helps but it doesn't stop it all the time. So am tearing my hair out & don't know what to do anymore! My DH is now on night shift for 3 nights so will probably just keep doing what I'm doing until I can have some support to make some changes next week :dunno:
Other than that Moo has had pretty bad separation anxiety in general over the last few weeks! I can't leave the room or he freaks out & comes after me. He hates DH doing anything for him lately too - it's all about Mum :rolleyes:
But on the other hand he's now saying "woof" & "mum", has about 6 teeth I think, is crusing along furniture & is a little daredevil, oh & obsessed with our cats!
