Hi all,
Not doing too well at the moment. J is not coping at Kindy. He spent most of yesterday crying. Every time the teacher left his side he cried. This was during the “learning” part of the session. He was fine for morning tea, outside play and story time. She knows that he has anxiety. I don’t like her or the way she is approaching him. I didn’t like her when I met her last year, as she was vying for an aid for him on the grounds of his anxiety. She then pulls me aside and tells me that all the other kids are fine, so he should be too. That they can all produce awesome artwork, so he should be too.
I really want to pull him out and send him elsewhere. I know that he struggles, but what does she want me to do about it?? He did really well last week..
I think I need to go back to the GP. I might need further assistance for myself, as having panic attacks and very stressed.
Anyway I don’t even know why I am writing this. No one reads this thread anymore anyway……………………………….
awww meg..hopefully things calm down for J soon a few of the little fellas at jacks kindy were fine the first few weeks but last week and today OMG the tears the tantrums etc....I think its part of the age as well and new routines etc...
meg hopefully the GP can help ypou as well :comfort:
I am having dramas with Jacks kindy teacher now, first last week we had the hottest day ever I swear .... Jack come shome all flushed and worked up... then he started complainging of a headache I almost took his to the hospital as I suspected slight dehydration grr... so I approached the teacher next morning she fobbed me off then I came home to a ph call asking me to stay back to talk about the water issue...as I was unsure how they monitor the kids drinking etc, well they tell them to have a drink a few times a day but dont actually montior the kids drinking grrr...for freaks sake it was 35c+ day with 90% humidity....anyway we came to a solution jack can have his water bottle with the cups that way they can see how much he drinks so tuesday arvie I pick him up only 1/2 th ebottle is drunk...yep thats all grrrrrrr...and then today I asked about sunscreen application at kindy, she informs me they aren't allowed to apply it, WTF!! I signed a form saying they could, so basically I apply it at home he is then outside from 8.45am till 11am-ish no reapplication then they go inside but everyday have been outside when I pick him up at 2.45pm she informed me today oh they are only outside 10-15min before pick up fark!!!!!!! they can still burn in that time, so am waiting for a call from head office in brisbane re policy cause thats crap and if thats the case I will go down there very 2 hrs and reapply jacks sunscreen grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
At our kindy all the kids have their waterbottles that they can grab at any time for a drink. The sessions are shorter, so in regard to sunscreen, we apply before he goes and he should be fine. THey also have a no play outside policy from a certain temp.
Thanks for the reply Rach. It is nice that someone is listening. My thoughts are that if he doesn't appear ready by the end of the year, he can repeat kindy again. I just feel like her attitude that "all the other kids can do it, so so should he." is so wrong.
our kids ply outisde till 11am ish except when its wet as i said monday was a scorcher 32c when i dropped him off and they were outside...still waiting for ph call grrrr...they have big esky jug and each kid has a cuo to help themselves too but really how many 3-4 yr olds will stop play to have a drink
can he repeat kindy??? i know in qld they have to start grade 1 by a certain age
Meg, I cant believe that kinder teachers attitude! Why is she putting everyone into the one basket, why do they all have to be doing the same, i thought kids did things at different times and you help those that need it. What was the outcome of that assesment he had last year? sorry I've forgotten. Are there other kinders? why doesnt this teacher sit down with you and both discuss concerns and what areas to work on. Maybe look elsewhere someplace that will be more supportive.
It sucks too its affecting your anxiety. Keep in mind about repeating kinder, my nephew did and so did Matts nephew and it did them really well.
Rach, our kinder doesn't do sunscreen but like Megs they are half days and they specify for us to put in on everyday between Oct and april I think. Its hard when theyre away from us and we have to rely on others to do stuff we normally do.
That sucks Meg. Could it just be him getting used to kinder? I'm actually thinking an aide could be great, or just anyone who can suggest activities, give him a heads up about what's happening, so that he feels comfortable about what's going on. If the teacher doesn't have time to walk J through as much as she'd like, perhaps an aide/assistant could help. Maybe can you ask if he's been seeming anxious about anything in particular, and work with him on it? Like with the 'learning' time, sit down and do similar activities at home so he doesn't feel out of his depth at kinder?
Hugs though, it's tough when our kids struggle.
Erk at the sunscreen thing Rach. That's wierd about them not applying sunscreen...why do you check that box then? Wonder what our kinder does. Ours go out first thing in the morning. Riv makes a beeline for the digger in the sandpit every morning, according to Rans. Ours has a shadecloth/sail thing, but I'm not sure 'better make sure I keep in the shade' is on a four year old's mind very much..
Riv hardly drinks at kinder, but it's not been hot so far. Hopefully that won't be an issue. I don't think ours have cups...maybe they do...
Riv's gotten off to a pretty good start at kinder! I wasn't sure what to expect with his speech/social delay but his teacher is really easy to communicate with on that. The first full day he did a lot of wandering during activity time, and had a meltdown and bit his arm 30min before pickup (they think he was just tired), but his second day he wandered much less and was happy. He's so proud of his lunchbox and schoolbag. There are two autistic kids in the class who share a part time aide, so if Riv really struggles they'll look at trying to extend her hours so she can help him, but I'm optimistic at this stage that we won't need it. We'll see. And I need to get off my butt and practice no wandering at home with him, maybe setting a timer - how long for do you think? 15 min? While we do an activity with no wandering allowed.
How's everyone else? So fun to have these kids in kinder. Hopefully all our issues are just teething problems.
ETA: That must have taken forever to write! Hi Shell!
well she made a point of telling em todayshe topped up his water bottle so he drank almost 2 bottles of water today which is good
so I got ahold of the local area (CQLD) co-ordinator about sunscreen policy she will look into it but what our hand book reads says the teacher/aides must apply sunscreen before outdoor play...also reapply at ceetain timelines as per sunscreen bottle instruction so she is out here on thurs doing a year begining assesment so she will be bringing it up subtely so I dont get dragged into it, (very small town) and will ring me friday and let me know the policy...
freaking crazy in the bloody qld heat not to be applying sunscreen to the kids, I have had one friend say oh they have shade fark me does no-one read the guidelines relating to slip slop slap etc
I jsut lost my post, so will do it when I get home from work tonight (not meant to be on BB now - naughty me!!) But today he did much better at Kindy.
Gee I miss everyone in this thread. I wish everyone was back on here.
YAY that J did better
Hey Meg.. sorry we dont mean to ignore your post.. Glad that J had a better day!! I haven't had a problem with Annika as much but i did with Millana at day care for 6mths straight, she would scream EVERY time i left her which was 2 days a week. I really hope it settles soon for him and he starts to enjoy himself.
Nelle- thats great about Riv
Rach- thats really odd about the sunscreen, Its def part of our health care system here. so hope they get on top of it.
Annika went and picked her school bag for when she starts school, not til term 4 but she is still ultra excited about it.
at our pre school where i am one of the teachers, we apply sunscreen as soon as the kids come in, we generally have the kids outside playing till 11am, most of them arrive after 9am, so we only apply sunscreen on their arrival, and when its afternoon outside play we reapply, but we head outside at 3pm, after aftrnnon tea. We have widebrim hats for all our children, as alot bring in their own, and they are not wide brim, so we bought all our children hats last year, so they all get maximum sun protection esecially the boys on their ears. We also bring the children inside on extreme heat days, if its too hot for us adults we go inside, inot the air condtioning, in nsw a couple of weeks ago we had around 9 days of extreme heat, most of those days we just kept the kids inside, letting them out for a 10minute "run" . we also have water in their drink bottles constinalty filling them up after each meal and placed in the fridge, or just left out for the kids to drink whenever they want.
it is hard being a teacher, as a couple of weeks ago, a parent turned up and her son was outside sitting in the sandpit, with no hat on, she spat the dummy big time, i was the only teacher outside, she threatened she was gonna take me to court if her son was sunbrnt etc etc..she was going off for about 30minutes....but little did she know that in the minute( and i mean minute) that she arrived to pick her boy up that he had just went inside to go to the toilet , taking his hat off, then getting into all the computer equipment( running off, when i asked him to come outside) then another child 2 year old, comes over to me crying as a child threw sand in his eyes, so i was cleaning all the sand out, when this boy came back outside, not putting his hat on and going back to the sand pit, and his mother turned up...shouting and screaming!! but the funny thing is she had 2 more children with her both walking outside with no hats on...and i had anothe couple parents there that saw the whole thing that just shook their heads.......luckily for me, i did not know this was all going on, only found out later, otherwise i think i would of been sacked that day for telling a parent what i think of them....
chris i didn't rant or anything just asked about sunscreen, as i said we had to sign a form giving permission also in the handbook it states one of the responsibilities of the teacher is to reapply sunscreen etc, and when she said to be oh they are only outside 10-15min before pick up (pick up being 2.45pm) being in QLD central QLD with the heat etc...I was like what planet are you from woman, I was so annoyed ,but hopefully it will all be resolved tomorrow and I will know whether they can or can't apply sunscreen if they can't I will ask to be informed what time they go outside in afternoon and I will pick jack up early...
hey rach didnt mean for that post to offend, just telling how our centre operates.
no offence jhust letting ya know I wasn't one of those mums
but christ I've put my foot in it for sure....most of you well those that read my FB page would have seen I made a comment about the policy never mentioned the kindy's name etc...but now I have been contacted my a commitee member basically telling me she felt the way I went about things was wrong etc, I should have contacted the committee if I felt the response from teacher was unacceptable, well **** I am a new parent to school I dont know how things fricken work, the worst thing was she was on my FB friend list, now I dont know if I delete the entire group of friends from my hometown, about 14 or so I have deleted this one plus another I know was on commitee but no longer lives in moura...but do I delete them all fark, is there a way of blocking a list of people when you make a comment on FB or do you have to block each individual person... i hate confrontations i get all emotional I dont think I did anything wrong all I did was ring the central group for the branch of kindies, then had to ring the loacal area co-ordinator...all I wanted to know was what was written int he book correct or was what the teacher saying correct ... turns out the teacher handbook hadn't been updated blah blah blah but frick me
