    Strengthening teeth - suggestions?

I'm going to the dr later this week for a full check up but thought i'd put it out there anyway.
What can I do to stregthen my teeth?
I had a traumatising experience at the dentist this week where she the more she drilled my tooth the more it crumbled. Now, I have half a tooth

The onlyr ealy dairy I have is in a coffee in the morning and some cheese so I can probably increase that. But is there anything else? Supplements? Any particular toothpastes or routines?? I can't afford for my teeth to continue crumbling like they are.

I've asked this question in the past and was told that the majority of your teeth's strength is governed by things beyond your control - obviously decay etc is within your control but basic, inherent strength isn't. I would love to hear that that was wrong - I've got terrible teeth and another of mine has just broken.

I'd love to know too lulu.

I had a filling come out on Sunday and went in on Monday. Thinking that she was just going to take out the remainder of the filling and put a new one in she just kept drilling. She then filled it and didn't tell me anything. Nothing about why so much of the tooth was drilled away and nothing about what I can do to improve dental health or what options i may have to remove or replace the tooth. I'm bawled my eyes out all the way back to the office because it is a tooth at the corner of my mouth.
Devested doesn't even begin to explain how i felt and still feel.

There is a product called tooth mousse by recaldent which strengthens the tooth enamel using some special protein derived from dairy. You put it on your teeth for about 5 mins every night. I used it after chemo wrecked my teeth and it made a huge difference.

The tooth has most likely crumbled because of decay, I'd start with regular check ups, flossing extra to avoid the decay. As for strengthing other teeth, I'd also suggest tooth mousse, your dentist should have it.

The mousse is about $20 a tube from the dentist. Much cheaper than hundreds of dollars of dental expenses. The gum is dearer but I order it in because I find it more convenient. I buy 2 large tubs and it lasts ages but I can't remember how much they are.

You could ask to make an appt with a dental hygienist, they will clean your teeth and advise you on how to clean and floss properly. Improving your teeth might also mean you have to give up drinking diet or regular soft drink or juices unless you clean straight after, and if you have reflux or have had it during pregnancy or you sleep with your mouth open that can wreck your teeth too, so worth talking to them about what you can do about that too.

Bone broths are reputed to strengthen teeth. Just make a stock using the frame of a roast chicken or beef marrow bones with some veges, herbs pepper etc, strain it through a fine strainer or a sieve with a coffee filter in it then make it into soup or use it as the stock for risotto or any other recipe calling for stock. It is full of the minerals that bones and teeth are made of. Buying stock when making it yourself is so full of health benefits is nuts. You do need to cook it for a long time to ensure all the benefits. Slow cooking overnight is a good method. I read a blog a while ago written by a woman who keeps a slow cooker on with bone broth 24/7. She starts it each Monday and then just ladles it out all week as needed.

I buy the recaldent gum too. It's not really much more expensive than the gums at the supermarket.

Oh and I meant to share my own private but completely unscientifically proven theory about the role of vitamin d in tooth mineralization. I cannot fathom that it is so important for bones without being crucial for teeth as well.

Oh I feel your pain. Bad dentist visits are so traumatic. Do you need to find a new dentist? I had a tooth implant done last year so I know how horrible it all is. I use the tooth mousse too.

What foods do you eat lots of? Sugar? Lemon?

Just popping in to say that I heard from good authority that brushing straight after eating sugar is actually worse, because the sugar acts as an abrasive so you should wait an hour. It would be awful to actually be doing more damage to your teeth when you were trying so hard to fix them.

    Saliva

Confirm that brushing your teeth shortly after eating is not a good idea.

Instead, wait an hour, and then brush your teeth (for 2 minutes) and follow up with a good (non-alcholoic) mouthwash.

Regarding factors beyond your control, saliva is a key factor in keeping your teeth strong and healthy. Saliva reduces the potency of corrosive agents, and a naturally calcium rich saliva can help protect your teeth even against sugary sodas and acidic juices.

    Hope that helps some

There are a lot of external factors to tooth problems and I think a lot of them stem from childhood. Too much and too little fluoride- both can be bad. Having extended illnesses and weakened immunity plays a part as do many medicines, and children who had lots of antibiotics or other aggressive medicines in childhood often have dental issues in later childhood or adulthood. Dentists don't really buy into this but genetics must play a part too. And good old calcium, but you need other basic nutrients like vitamin D too.

I have heard of fermented cod liver oil being good for strengthening and healing teeth? Haven't looked into it myself but might be worth doing your own research. We use tooth mousse for DS - he has very little calcium in his diet and hates having his teeth brushed so we spend a little extra in hope that it will help avoid too much damage.
