i think my baby has reflux, what to do?

for the last 4 weeks my baby has been really unsettled:
- cries a lot and does not sleep well
- will not lie flat, always cries
- he will go to sleep in my arms only in crunched position, as soon as i put him down on the bed, he cries
- when bottle feeding him, he stops and pushes his head back and cries
- he brings his legs up when he cries sometimes
- he vomits, sometimes small, sometimes a lot
- he does not drink the milk in one go, it drags on for 2 hours till his settled at every feed
- sometimes he would be lieing down playing and just pick him up and he starts crying

i thought it was just colic and givin infacol but does not work. i also thought its just a phase. My doctor just said thats part of being a baby and just have to put up with it

he has been on the NAN formula which is not thick and also been expressing and feeding.

i think he has reflux. what should i do from here?

have you spoken to your mchn about it?
did you mention to the gp that you thought he had reflux?

We thought DS had reflux at one point and our gp prescribed him losec which we used for a few days. In the end we stopped the losec and nothing got worse so we figured it was just a stage and he is now a happy chucker (and boy can he chuck!) I would suggest you see your gp about the reflux and get a prescription for losec and if the situation gets better then you were right. I know there are other things you can use but im not sure whether you need a prescription for these as well.

We also have a wedge for ds that sits under his cot sheet kinda like a pillow but safer which elevates his head. I have heard that this is good for babies with relux as it stops the stomach acid rising and causing the heart burn. We got ours from toys r us and this may help if he doesn't want to lie flat. When he sleeps in the crunched position is his head raised? He may find that position more comfortable if he is getting the heartburn pain.

My GP sugegsted to me not to use a thickened formula as it sits on the babies belly longer and gives it more time to come back up and cause the reflux pain.

The fussing at the bottle does sound a bit like reflux. Does he do this at every feed as i find that ds will fuss at the bottle if he is tired sometimes too. But that obviously isn't every feed. If he is doing it at every feed then that does sound like reflux.

I think mothers instinct is always something to go on. If you dont feel that the gp you went to initally will support your concerns then prehaps see a different gp. Even if you try the losec for a couple weeks and see whether it makes a difference at least then you can rule relux out.

thanks for your quick replies. Didn't tell the gp I think he had reflux because did not figure it out.
Will go to the gp on Monday and discuss

Do u think I should change formula? The nan ha gold I have runs out tomorrow. The first four weeks he was on S26 and he was fine but I was breastfeeding then and he would just have formula once a day. So not sure.
Till last week I was breastfeeding mainly on only giving formula occasionly just to top up.

He doesn't breastfeed now for the last week, just refuses it that's why he is on formula and expressed milk
