well i work at home some of the time, in a home office.. but i have a managerial job in a large company so it is more just virtual working when i am able to. i couldnt work here properly if ds was here so he goes to care on my work days regardless of if i am home or not...
i know friends who have done online stores, freelance writing, tupperware etc from home with baby there - just had to manage it around sleep times well etc. prob something that doesnt require you to be at the end of the phone at any time and that you can manage your own hours is best.
i know some others who have done stuff like catalogue deliveries - not so scintillating maybe but did a walk each day for an hour or 2 with baby and brought in a little bit of moolah through that. could work as well?

I have tried to get my own little business off the ground this year while having my 3yo at home. It hasn't worked at all. next year he will be in full time care... i have decided that it might be better to juggle a paid position with somebody else and maybe be able to afford a day or two at home (with 3yo in care) than try to struggle on at home with him.

    How are you going?

It's REALLY hard coming up with an idea that will work from home - unless you have an online business or have skills that you could freelance with.

I know it's not ideal but is another option to get a casual job in the evenings when your partner's home or on the weekends? Like I said, not ideal at all but it would provide a bit more money and the added benefit is that your partner gains a new appreciation of what it's like to look after a baby! A friend of a friend did that and got a Saturday job working at the museum. She loved it.

I do family daycare from home. This way my children dont have to be in care but they still get the interaction with other children. They have offices in most areas just google family daycare in you area or look in the phone book. I know sometimes with new carer's the government will actually give you a grant to help you set up!! Its something to look into!!

    Good luck!!!

It is hard to work with kids around - no matter where your "office" is. I second the idea of evening work - so MUCH easier!

I looked into doing family daycare here but I did the sums and I would have probably had to pay to look after other people's children. When I looked into it (3 years ago) you were paid about $2 per hour per child. I already had 3 children so i think I could only have 2 more... so it was a max of $4 an hour. Once you provide meals and pay for the extras like safety issues (gates etc) it just wasn't worth it for our family. I have 5 years experience working in childcare too.

That job working in a museum of a weekend sounds great Fiona! Maybe for once I could put my Fine Art degree to use!!! And oh the PEACE and cleanliness and it would be air-conditioned LOL!

There are plenty of other work from home opportunities out there, but you have to be careful to avoid scams. I found a good one that I can do any time around family commitments. Check out my website in my signature if you are interested.
