Is 14 months too young to be going from 2 sleeps to 1 sleep

    Hi guys

Just want to pick your brains but I am finding that DS is staying up for 4 + hrs before I can put him down to sleep in his cot with minimul fuss, if I put him down after 3 hrs we have over 30 mins of crying with me going in every few minutes to settle. He is also only really napping, sleeping anywhere for 30 - 90 mins. Then after that sleep it will be another 4+hrs and so his 2nd sleep isn't until about 4pm which means he ends up going to bed 8.30 - 9pm which is a bit late - maybe?

What confuses me is my SIL looked after him the other week and he slept over 2 hrs in the morning and another 90 mins in the afternoon!! she did play lot's with him but he even sleeps for longer for dp then for me - WHY?

Anyway I was wondering if I should try and push keep him up longer before him morning sleep and cutting out the afternoon one.... any advice?

My DD dropped her morning sleep at about 9 or 10 months old and now goes to sleep for 1-2 hours just after lunch and that's all she has

DS was about 14 months when he went to one day sleep. He went down at 11.30, sleep for a few hours (maybe 3?) and then go to bed at around 7.30/8.00 at night.

Ahhh. How I miss that day sleep.

14 months is a great time to cut back to one sleep. You can do it gradually, by having 2 sleeps one day, 1 sleep the next - this works brilliantly for some babies and just annoys others, so you'll know the best way to do it.

Changes to the routine can be quite tiring for little ones, so being with your SIL and all the different things happening would have helped to tire him out. Same with your DP, although maybe not so extreme. It's a good strategy, doing physically demanding stuff in the morning - they often eat better and then sleep better.

    Good luck!

14 months sounds like a good time - especially if your DS seems to be ready for it. My DD1 was 12 months when she went from 2 to 1 sleep and she kept up the 1 sleep until she turned 3 this year (unfortunately it has now disappeared )

My son is 14.5mths and for the past 2 weeks has been dropping his morning nap. He now has one around 11:30 12pm for around 2 hrs. He then lasts till about 5pm and is in bed by about 5:30pm no fuss!! Seems pretty normal to me and it's great for some time with my Husband when he gets home from work. Aslong as they are happy and it seems to work for them I think you should follow their cues.

Jazz has just about dropped her morning sleep now, she'll go down 1ish most days and only has a morning sleep (9ish) if she had a bad night/got up early or is sick. I think I heard that between now and 16 months is when they usually do? So whenever they are ready really in this 6 month period they do it themselves.

i agree with rustygirl. it is important to follow your baby's cues.
my ds1 did not drop his morning nap until he was 19 months old. we did it very gradually. we'd go for swims, playdates, visits, playparks and any other outing in the morning. return home for an early lunch, read some books to wind down and he'd be in his cot by 12/12.30pm. he would then sleep for 2-3 hours. i have found that the afternoon nap works out better, because for most babies it turns into a longer nap which in return allows you a bit more time to yourself to work, read, rest, whatever...later down the track they tend to push that sleep later and later. ds1 is now two years old and he can last until about 2pm most days before his nap. sadly, he'll probably be saying goodbye to his nap in the coming months...although i am clinging onto it for dear life.

I swear Jack and Jazz are twins separated at birth (except that they are not the same age, PMSL). Jack has just dropped to one sleep (at around 1 o'clock) most days as well. Unless he gets up very early in the morning, then he may have two.

My DS dropped to one sleep at 10 months old. I agree that you just have to follow their cues. If you don't think they want to sleep, keep them up and see how they cope. You'll soon know if they're ready!

    Hi Kelebek,

DS dropped from two sleeps to one about 2-3 months ago. Now he generally goes down around midday (although it could be an hour either side) and he will sleep for about 2 hours. I find that he needs about 5 hours of awake time for him to be ready for a sleep.

Having said that ... he had an unsettled night last night and woke fully about 6.15am this morning . He was cranky around 9.45am this morning, so I put him down for a sleep (he's just stirring now), and so I imagine he'll be ready for another nap later this afternoon.

I get the impression that many toddlers over the age of 12-14 months are ready and happy to go to one solid sleep a day, but then every child is different. In response to your last paragraph, I'd say you've got nothing to lose by keeping him awake a bit longer in the morning and then seeing if he'll have one "good" sleep. I guess you'll know within a few days if he's ready to make that transition. Good luck.

My DS has just recently gone to one sleep at 15 months. He was kept up by accident and ended up sleeping for almost 3 hours at 12.30pm, bliss! So now I put him down anywhere between 12.30 and 1.00.

    It depends on the child.
