Congratulations on your little one VH. Newborns should be pooing several times a day in the first few weeks - often it's every nappy change! And mustard yellow is the perfect colour for breastfed babies, so well done on doing such a great job! Don't worry about her seeming to be in pain - this is quite normal and is usually not pain at all - just your little one getting used to new sensations.

In the early months, breastfed babies will usually feed 8 - 12 times in 24 hours. Usually they will have one longish sleep in 24 hours (up t o5 hours), and feed at least every 2 hours the rest of the time. This is perfectly normal. It is also common for them to cluster feed at one point in 24 hours - that is having several short feeds one after the other.

You might like to consider joining the ABA (Australian Breastfeeding Association). You get a fantastic book free when you join up and it has so much information in it for mums who are learning about babies and breastfeeding. You can also go to local meetings with other mums and it's a very supportive environment.

The ABA also run a 24 hour, toll-free helpline which everyone is welcome to call (you don't have to be a member). They are able to give you information and support with any of your breastfeeding concerns or questions. The number is 1800 mum 2 mum.

Hi! Congratulations on your little one!

What you've described sounds completely normal, especially at 3 weeks old. My DS was exclusively BF'd and he would poo that many times per day - mostly yellow, sometimes greenish. He'd also have a definite poo face and noise! It's hard to watch sometimes but as long as the poo is not harder than plasticene, it's ok. If you're worried you could have a chat to your MCHN though.
