Over the last few nights I have been waking up during the night with numb/tinlgling sensations in my arm and hand. Initially I thought this may be because I'm sleeping on my arms, however I have noted that this is not always the case.
Could this be Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? I don't have any of these symptoms during the day...
I will be seeing my doctor next week - do you think this could wait until I see my doctor?
it could be - though i only developed ct syndrome after the birth from bfeeding (not holding properly) so i am no expert...
if it isnt too painful it can prob wait to see your dr. i would then recommend going to physio or something - better to prevent real full on pain which is pretty awful.
when i had mine i used a wrist brace for a bit which really helped and the physio also gave me some exercises and massage techniques that helped a lot.
oh my god you just jogged my memory - i had completely forgotten i had CT with my last pregnancy, and i would wake up with the most aching sore numb wrists..... from memory there wasn't a lot the doctor could do, i think its just one of the many lovely side effects of pregnancy... great i will probably get it again this pregnancy!! funny how you forget these things!
Yep it definitely sounds like it.
I have had one major occurance of CTS this pregnancy but had it constantly with my last pregnancy.
I have been getting acupuncture which has helped so much. I am also more aware of the positions of my hands when I sleep now. I have to make sure my hands are not clenched or in silly positions.
I got it very badly last pregnancy due to weight gain and water retention, and a little bit this one. My Chiro is helping relieve a lot of the symptoms and I also try not to sleep with my hands under my head/body. Accupuncture helped me HEAPS last pregnancy as they wanted to operate on both hands when it didn't get better after birth, and I wore braces on my hands at night, sometimes during the day, to stop my hands clenching. (you can have these made for you or get generic ones from the chemist)
If you wait to see the Dr then you will get a referral and it wont cost as much. Otherwise book into see either a Chiro, osteopath, physio, accupuncturist or OT as they would all help. In the meantime, rub your wrists or get someone to rub them, on the inside of your wrist from the middle to the outside. It does help. GL!
Oh, isn't it horrid! I woke up one morning and suddenly I couldn't pull on pants, turn door handles or drive without that shooting pain. I really hope it clears quickly and you have caught it soon enough to manage the early stages before it gets any worse. I found resting it as much as possible helped and definitely look at getting a wrist brace. It cleared up for me about a week before the birth but I have had to be careful not to flare it up again. When I start to get the tingles, I know it is time to give my hand a bit of a rest and so far have avoided getting to the painful stage, thankfully.
I actually don't have any pain in the morning or during the day, and my wrists don't look swollen and aren't sore..... Is this what it actually progresses to?
I developed carpal tunnel a couple of years ago (not pregnancy related). I had it under control through various stretching exercises (shown to me by my physio and chiro) but since I got pregnant it has come back with a vengeance. The only thing that is giving me relief at night are wrist braces. Get ones that have a metal support to stop your thumbs from bending. They can be a bit annoying at first and they're not great for cuddling (!) but the absence of pain, numbness and tingling and not waking up several times a night is just wonderful.
