travel cot? or how to sleep 4-month-old safely when travelling?

We are planning to travel overseas with our baby when she's 4-5 months old. I'm wondering whether we need to get a travel cot for her (one of those very lightweight ones that pops up like a tent, obviously), or whether there is another solution to where she can safely sleep.

At 4 months she'll be rolling, presumably, and possibly able to sit up on her own. So it needs to be something that is safe with a more moble baby than a newborn. I'm concerned about the potential for a suffocation risk with travel cots in general, and with the risk that she might be able to tip it over if she rolls into the side of it. Maybe that's not a problem? I don't know.

Any suggestions? What have you tried and how did it work for you?

Currently DD sleeps in her sleeping bag in a "co sleeper" cot by my side of the bed. I'd certainly consider sleeping with her while we travel if I thought we could do it safely, but it would have to be a pretty big bed to fit all 3 of us, and not sure whether that's possible to ensure. (DH is tall, and he and I don't fit so well into a double bed - it has to be at least queen sized, for comfort.)

Are you staying in hotels or with friends.
If you are staying in hotels they should be able to offer something. If you are staying with friends ask them if they can borrow one from friends. That's what friends of ours did when they had people visiting from overseas.
Porta cots are pretty safe these days the big problem will be luggage weight

    hi there!

we use the kinderkot everytime we travel and love it! we have been using it since DD was a newborn.
it folds up and fits into your suitcase and weighs next to nothing. i can really recommend it on all fronts.

We always use our portacot when we go away. Even if we go to my parents for dinner or something, we use the portacot. They're very safe for babies. At 4 months, she probably won't be sitting up, and she may not even be rolling at that stage. Some babies don't start rolling/sitting up until a little later on, some are earlier.

    Hi,

My DD is nearly 5mths old and when we travel or stay at Mum's place or in-laws' we bring the portacot with us (the one you are talking about) and they are perfectly safe. They can't tip them over especially at that age!! We also have a little bed that goes in it which DD always has in her cot at home as it makes her feel snug and supports her. Its called "my little bed" i bought it from Mothers Direct. just google it you will find it.
it's a great product. folds up into a little bag with a handle so easy to carry around !!
