Hi, Firstly what are the chances of Isabelle being called only Isabelle and Izzy not Belle? Also, what is your preference to the spelling?
Her name would probably be:
Isabel Jade
Isabelle Jade
My first daughter is Brooke which my family think is in the 'classic' name group so bubba 2, needs a classic kind of name. Which brings me to the dilemma of spelling, DH likes Isabelle and I like Isabel but am not loving 'Belle' as a nickname so am really unsure of this as a name choice.
I don't have a prob with the name & like the spelling Isabelle, but having said that I don't think you will have much luck with it being shortened at some stage. If you stick to your guns & call her as you want her to be called most will respect that...but at some point kids etc will choose. I doubt belle we be a prob as much as izzy.....I've found the name really popular atm for the nickname izzy.
I prefer Isabel because I think it is the more daintier (sp?) of the two.
I also agree with Erin, that most people will use whatever name you do. So if you call her Izzy, they will follow suit, I doubt they would just call her Belle out of the blue iykwim.
lmao, we're naming our soon to be born daughter, Isabelle Jade too, how funny!
obviously we preffer the spelling Isabelle and she'll be shortened to Izzy.
i think if u start saying Izzy as soon as she's born, or beforehand if ppl know what ur having and calling her then it'll stick over belle.
thats what we've done and everyones already calling her Izzy
I'm not sure if an extra le on the end will stop people shortening it. My Isabelle was Isabelle right up until Twilight was released so now she is Bella - and totally happy about it
Why don't you check out the historical/tribal/cultural reasons for the spelling?
I ended up with the longer version cos it's spanish and so is my family name.
If we have a girl, we're going with Isobel and love the nickname Izzy. We will be encouraging people to call her that too but I have no doubt that (if we do have a girl!) she would also get Belle at some point in her life. Doesn't bother us either way, it's kind of out of our hands IMO. I had one nickname most of my life from family and friends but when I moved to WA 10 years ago, everyone over here started calling me by a new nickname (another short version of my name) so now I have two common nicknames. I couldn't care less as I like them both!
Ah, I just love the name Isobel. Good luck with you decision.
My name is spelt Isabel (obviously) and I have hardly ever had my name shortened. I have two close friends that call me Izzy (which i dont mind) but mum was always adamant that i should be called Isabel and not shortened so i am mainly known as Isabel. In saying that thouogh my family is polish and they all call me Iza so that is what i grew up with.
I like Isabel, it seems the more unusual of the two and lends itself less to the belle nickname possibly? But I think nicknames are unavoidable no matter what the name is. I have an Ivy and she gets called Ive. ????? WHat the????
Thank you all for your responses!! I LOVE Isabel but DH and I have done nothing but have big blow up fights about the spelling Isabel looks prettier to me where Isabelle looks prettier to him! I am sticking to my guns but am not sure how I am going to resolve this... Do we move on to another name?
Isabelle is very pretty and like the others I agree that it will prob get shortened - as a teacher we do that all the time!! I disagree with your family - to me Brooke is more modern than the classica name of Isabelle. I have no idea if I am right but it doesn't sound as classic to me. Other classic names I would say would be Charlotte, Emily, Grace, Lily etc.
