My waters never broke until I was at the very end of my labours. The heavy feeling is very normal towards the end though, your bub is probably pushing down deep into your pelvis, almost ready to come out
It won't be long now!
Just wondering because I'm 3 going on 4 days overdue and sometimes I think, oooh I feel really heavy all of a sudden, maybe my waters are about to break? And then bubs just moves around a bit and nothing ?
So was there anything significant for you just before your waters broke ?

i was just into the 1st part of my pushing stage when my waters broke .. it was this warm fullness .. for me it was a nice feeling , like a euphoric release (not like orgasmic or anything) but i was in awe of my body to get as far as it did in labour and my water breaking was unlike anything i have felt ... but there was no waring or leading up to it ... it just hapened very quickly !!
GL with the birth xx
I felt my waters break with DS...It literally felt like a pop! Slight kinda sharpish pain (that didn't hurt. Hard to explain) then felt the pop, then...lovely! All over BIL's bed!
I didn't feel anything before that though![]()
Mine have broken in active labour or been broken for me, but I think it feels like a lot of pressure just before hand. It's probably different if they break at before the onset of labour though I imagine![]()
I was having contractions on & off, was sitting on the couch eating dinner. I had a contraction that really made me squirm and I thought 'argh.. I should go to the toilet". As I was going up the stairs I started to leak... got to the loo JUST in time for a massive gush. LOL. Don't recall a pop or anything, just a particularly squirmy contraction.
Nothing different for me. I was walking into the loungeroom, hadn't had any contractions or anything & then there was a leak. After that it was a little gush every time I moved!
First time, I just felt the usual birth pains, my waters broke near the end I think, I was in a bath at the time.
Second time, nothing, I was asleep. But I woke with a huge confused start, because I heard the pop and felt it quite strongly at the same time, even though I'd been asleep, I woke straight away knowing what had happened. It was a very sudden, definite feeling for me the second time around. But nothing before.
My waters broke before contractions started. I woke up (after 10mins sleep) & I felt like I had to wee & then I felt a pop & there was a gush (all over the bed)
HTH
Like a burst water main on pitt st....there was soooooo much fluid.....to me it felt like i was weeing myself (and weeing, and weeing, and weeing ) and couldnt stop, i had no control.
I asked the MW to rupture my membranes whilst in labour with DS. She did an internal and said she could feel 'like a balloon just waiting to be popped' - DS head was causing so much pressure...i knew once my waters broke it would move the labour along....and it did.
GL....
1st time I was sleeping, so felt nothing.
2nd time, I was in established labour and thought my body was going to break in half when my waters broke. Once they broke though it was the best feeling, and bub was born only 40 min later.
Thanks for your responses girls ! Ok so waters can break after contractions ..... didn't know that? I always thought your waters break and then contractions start shortly after... So I guess I just wait then....
Thanks again![]()
MIne have only broken once naturally.
I remember squatting down to pick something up off the floor and I felt a pop. I worried heaps because I didn't know if I'd hurt myself or the baby. I went to the toilet and realised I was leaking. I changed underwear, put on a pad and carried on with my day. Later I felt strange and went to the toilet to check and my mucus plug was sitting there on the pad. I didn't get a big gush of fluid, just consistant leaking until bub was born.
Mine broke before contractions started with DD1. (Didn't feel them as I was asleep)
They had to be broken with DD2 about 5 minutes before she was born.
They broke about an hour into a 5 hour labour with DS.
Every birth is differentThey may break, they may not.
I felt as though I needed to go to the toilet although I'd just been a minute or 2 before. Then I rolled over in bed and it just popped and fluid gushed out. I thought I was weeing but couldn't stop, then I realised what had happened.
My waters broke before contractions started. I was asleep in bed and didn't feel anything other than a slight leak and I remember suddenly waking up thinking "oh crap I'm peeing the bed!" As soon as I stood up, I had a big gush. Didn't feel anything other than wet!
That's what usually happens, actually. For most women, their water breaks during labour at some point. Occasionally it happens before contractions start, but generally, it's a strong contraction that causes the membranes to rupture. (Or the midwife might break them for you in labour - in my experience, that speeds things up quite a bit, but it doesn't work for everyone, and it does put your labour on a time-line before they want to start antibiotics and augment your labour.)
The really heavy feeling you've got is most likely your baby's head - it's dropped into your pelvis, getting ready to come out! Hurray! If you want to, and can manage around the belly, you can feel your baby's head, in the bath or shower - I find that an amazing thing to touch.(through the vaginal wall/cervix, of course - you won't be actually touching baby's skin just yet) Just make sure you are gentle and have nice clean hands - wash before and after.
All the best for a great delivery!![]()
