Miss B started off eating really well- 3 meals a day and 4 bottles a day!
Than went off her meals and wont be spoon feed at all will only eat certain things and not much so lucky to get 2 meals a day! but still would have 3-4bottles a day!
Now she is still fussy with what she eats, and is only having 2bottles a day of about 150mls! its stressing me out that she wont have her bottles! Last night her last bottle was at 1700 than didnt have another until 0730 the next morning! looks like tonight is going the same way!
im really worried about the lack of bottles! what should i do?
What are her weight gains like Harmony? Have you got a good MCHN you can talk to about it who knows her history?
Sounds to me like she's just too busy having fun and being mobile and she'll soon catch up and want more food/bottles again soon... I've read that this happens at different stages to babies... but you are her Mum and know her best... get it checked out if you are worried. Let us know how you go. Considering she is only 9mths old I would have thought she'd want (and need) more than just 2 x 150ml bottles a day too.
My dd is 9 months and doing a similar thing. Some days she will only have 2 breast feeds, she might have a quick suck at some other point in the day. I was worried but she has gained back the weight she lost when she was sick and is weeing and pooing ok. Im trying to keep my worry in check as long as she keeps gaining weight. If you are worried get her checked by your mchn or gp. When my dd is getting teeth she often goes off feeds for a bit. They are just so busy at this age, does she have any water during the day? Sometimes dd wont have a bf but will then crawl over and have a little water out her cup a bit later so Im not too worried about dehydration.
I hope its justa stage she is going through and starts drinking more again. Just another thougt is she okay otherwise? Do you think she may have a sore throat or other illness that might be putting her off eating and drinking?
Ren - her weight gains are going along in a line on the graph in our red books - she hasnt had any drastic weight gains or losses - the Nurse at the chemist commented last time about how nicely its going!
As her mum i think she is fine - but im just worried cause everyone says for the 1st 12mths its mainly the milk they need as it has all the nutrients and vitamins etc in it that they need! so that bit is majorly stressing me out! that she isnt getting that! otherwise she is a happy baby! but ur right maybe i should talk to someone just to be on the safe side
Sararose - as worrying as it is im glad im not the only one going through this! Miss B is weeing and pooping fine also - so maybe she is getting enough! i leave a sippy cup with water around on the floor for her and she does occassionaly go over and pick it up but usually spits the water out - she isnt a fan of water! but yep otherwise i think she is fine! nothing seems out of the ordinary! she not overly whingy or anything, is sleeping through the night! i really have no idea - is it really that important for them to be having a few bottles a day? am i stressing over nothing?
A friend mentioned that maybe she has cut out her night time feeds? is that possible? isnt she too young? oh my gosh if she is making me this worried at 9,5mths of age imagine what her teenage years are going to be like!
check out my thread hun. Mia blunty refused drinking formula AT all!! Its called "refusing formula at 9.5 months, what do i do now?"
gladly, shes over it now. but it took of cutting out on of her bottles, the lunch time one. So she has one at 7:30am, 6pm and 10pm. She was so dying for that one at 6pm, she scoffs it down lol.
I brought this to my MCHN. She told me to put her on cows milk (she drinks this no problem) and get a multivitamin from her from the chemist. I didnt do this but i mixed it for a couple bottles, just 1/3 cows milk.
At 9.5 months she is MORE than capable of going 12 hours without a bottle.
remember to take into other counts.. teeth... sickness.. sore throat.. developmental milestone.
See i wasnt so worried about Mia not getting enough nutrition, just her getting dehydrated. But soon learnt, if they are that thirsty, they will drink water. All else failed, she always drank cows milk. Dont worry about her nutrition too much hun. I know your an awsome mum and she will be getting enough from the great food u do give her.
watch for signs of dehydration, but if shes like M she wont coz she drinks the bath water.. eww lol
so as i said, M did get over this and like u i was pulling my hair out.
My DD has been the same for about a month now. I often have to 'trick' her into eating or drinking by making her laugh to get her to open her mouth, or giving her something that she likes to put to her mouth and then sticking the bottle in their whilst simultaneously distracting her with something to look at, ie - me pulling funny faces, Daddy singing, a kids movie in eye shot I worry non-stop too but as everyone keeps saying to me - as long as they are growing, look healthy and pooing and weeing and the really low intake days aren't constant, don't worry. I think it's just the age of everything being too exciting to want to waste time eating combined with all the teething they go through.
(edit) Ha Ha, Mumma Mia, Why is it that these babies can not drink their bottles or eat their food but they will chew on a mangey shampoo bottle and lap up the shower/bath water. Does my head in.
I wouldn't worry. My MCHN said that by 8 months a baby should not have more than 3 bottles a day (preferably less) and be eating whatever the family eats. At 12 months she said they should only have 250ml of milk (as in regular milk, not formula).
hon, i feel your pain DS is going through a similar thing at the moment, he flat out refuses to eat vegies, will only eat fruit and the only veg i can get him to have is when i trick him with two spoons of fruit followed by one of veg. Should see the looks he gives me when i do this, priceless! He is having 5 bottles a day but 3 of them are only 100mls which is strange for him. Dh and i were going to stop doing his dream feed but i am concerned to do this now as this is the only full bottle he will have during the day. I went and weighed him today and he has put on only a tiny bit of weight in the last couple weeks which is stange for him as he has always been a big gainer but he is crawling alot now so maybe he is burning more energy. Might just be a stage they go through at around this age? Im trying not to get too worked up about it but like you im starting to get a bit worried.
My DD is 8 months and she's not gone off her BF so much but she's definitely been going on and off her solids in the last 1-2 weeks, particularly when you try to feed her with a spoon. She's gotten really picky with what wants to eat also, when she used to gobble up anything and everything offered.
I think what's happening to her is that she's asserting her independence and her will now and just deciding "Well, I don't want to eat/drink milk at the moment" or "I don't want to have any of that right now" or "I want to feed myself, not you feeding me" or "I'm too busy doing my own thing" and I gather this is a developmental milestone babies around this age go through, from what I've read - being able to indicate what they do and don't want, and assert their independence.
Perhaps you could try offering her a bottle at different times of the day than you normally do, to see whether she wants to take it at other times. Another thought was that if she is going to her sippy cup and drinking out of that (another way of doing her own thing in her own time), perhaps you could fill it will some formula and see if she will take it, even if you leave it on the floor for a few minutes for her to take in her own time.
Can you offer her lots of different finger foods now? I've found that even if my DD has something eat herself with her hands then she is much more accepting of being feed a little off a spoon in between munching away on her own thing.
It could also be that she's ready to not feed at night anymore, so you may find if she continues to not feed at night that she will adjust and her milk intake will pick up during the day.
I hope it sorts itself out quickly. It's hard when your baby goes from being a great eater/drinker to suddenly changing, but it's definitely normal, and it will definitely pass - at least this is what I keep telling myself too - "It's just a stage, Miss C..."
