Do not understand, any advice appreciated!

    Hi all,

I went for my 19 week scan yesterday hoping to see that all was well with little one and fond out the sex.....when we got in there, we were there for a maximum of 5 mins from start to finish and the radiologist told us that I was actually 4 weeks or a month behind what I though I was.

The first day of my last period was the 14th of April and I recorded it straight away, having a 4 day cycle and I did not have a cycle again after that, nothing at all....So I want to know how they work out I fell pregnant on the 11th May ( Or there about ) according to one scan alone, if I didn't have another cycle after April.

Their reasoning was that the fetus was smaller than he/she should be for 19 weeks and our question is couldn't that justy indicate a small or slow developing baby??

We are really unsure here as our last 3 pregnancies were all at the right date.

This was my first scan and I just don't know what to think, I am seeing the GP tomorrow.

If I wasn't so clear on my dates I wouldn't even question this but I have them written down.

Also the placenta was low lying and almost right near the cervix, This I know can create problems!!

Thanks for reading, Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated!!

How confusing and worrying for you!

    I have had plenty of scans - 14 with this bub and around 20 with DS and NONE of them were that quick. Wasnt it supposed to be your morphology scan?? Both of my 20 week scans took literally over an hour, with this bub they actually did 5 scans over 4.5 hours just to make sure of a couple of the measurements and checks. I would be questioning the following at your GP;

    # how experienced was the technician who did the scan - we only go to women's ultrasound specialists who have a tech then a Dr review the scan each time

    # how much time was spent / how many checks made of the measurement of the baby to see that the dating / growth estimate was accurate

    # did the tech measure all of the following to check dates estimate; head and belly circumference as well as leg length? Are you or DH actually short? and therefore could just be having a short baby?

    # getting a second opinion - I would be really keen to get this done very soon to get some clarity.

    # did they check the placenta function and or flow along the umbilical cord to check for growth restriction? Sorry to mention it but that was an issue with DS and we are now on Asprin which has helped this one grow really well.

Good luck with your appt tomorrow. I hope your GP has some answers or at least refers you for a more thouough scan.

I'm a little shocked you were in and out so quick too!
My morphology scan at 20wks took around an hour too.

I would talk to your GP like PP said and see what he/she says and make sure you say that it only took 5mins!!!

    Good luck Tash

I'd be asking for a referral to somewhere else. That was way too quick for them to do the measurements correctly.

How confusing and distressing for you. It sounds like maybe it was too early for them to do the scan properly so maybe that's why it was so quick. Hopefully your GP will give you more details.

There are reasons why your dates can be out - it could be that you ovulated late that cycle, or something like that. Try not to worry about it until you can find out more. GL hun.

    Thanks so much everyone!!

    WOW!!!

Thanks so much all of you for your kind words and advice, suggestions and questions to ask GP.

From the word go, the radiographer was not very polite, did not introduce them self to my husband or I and just did not seem at all interested in the job at hand. let alone being at work that day by the body language was perceived.

Anyway yes it was meant to be my morphology scan as I was ( at least I thought ) 19 weeks. And yes the radiographer did mention that the bub being only at that gestational age,(15 Weeks ) the fetus was too young to do a longer scan so I will grant them that fact, although I have even had longer dating scans with my previous pregnancies, internal ultrasounds.

Thank you to all those suggestions of questions to ask my GP, I will add them to my list and thank you for the possible reasoning behind a few of my queries!!

I had considered the fact that I may have ovulated later than I had originally thought, we had no real need to track such a thing in the past!

I think what my main concern was that I am positive about my dates and am worried that the bub isn't developing accordingly. The head circumference measurement was only 2.9 cm and that to me just doesn't seem right, considering a baby of that gestational age should measure around 4.5 inches in length roughly!!

This web site was recommended to me by a friend, she told me that you guys were so helpful, so thank you!!

Anyway I will ask all these questions to my GP tomorrow and keep you all informed!!

    Many thanks once again

    Update

    Hi all,
Thanks so much for all your advice and suggestions!

I saw my GP yesterday and even though he could not properly answer for my why I didn't have a period in May (As my last period was April) and still fell pregnant in May he was helpful. He seemed to think that it is just one of those things that cannot be explained, like how some women still have a cycle or cycles in their first trimester!

Anyway he was able to explain to me in more detail the reasoning behind the radiographers assessment that I was only 15 weeks and not the 19 weeks we initially were told. According to all the measurements (There were about 7 different measurements taken ) the bub is at 15 weeks and the radiographer couldn't do too much that day because of that fact! So they have booked me in for my morphology scan in a months time (At 19 weeks) and I will know more then when they can do a more thorough scan and spend more time looking over bub!!

We are still keen to find out the baby's sex, and I am a little concerned with the placenta being low lying and so close to my cervix. They said that they will monitor that at the morphology scan and it it has not migrated enough away form my cervix as the uterus expands then they will have to check it again at around 32-36 weeks.

Anyway, I do feel better now after going to see my GP, and having him explain in more detail because it was a little bit of a shock to be told that you are 4 weeks behind what you thought you were, especially with such precise dates of last menstrual cycle!

So thanks again for your advice and concern, now I just have to re program my brain and set myself back 4 weeks!!

Not your main concern i am sure, but did you pay for this US? I think 5 mins is just ridiculous and certainly not value for money - they were probably running behind and thus the rush, but that's not acceptable at all!

Glad to hear you got an explanation Tash. Although bit of a bugger now you have to adjust yourself a month back, maybe try to think of it like you've now got an extra month to get organised for bub.
The main thing is all's well with bub
Maybe the sonographer needs some lessons on people skills and beside manner!!!

Hope you're feeling less stressed now good luck for a happy and healthy rest of your pregnancy

Wow, isnt the body amazing? I cant imagine resetting my pregnancy clock by a whole 4 weeks but better to have a month more than a month less!

Wishing you a happy and healthy rest of your pregnancy!

I ended up with a month less with DS1, had a bleed which I thought was my period when I was already pg found out at my scan that instead of being 13wks I was actually more like 17wks , which explained all the movement I had felt that people told me was way too early to feel!
