    Just found this info!

    Preservative 220:
Preservative. Occurs naturally in the atmosphere and as a pollutant gas from combustion processes, sulphur dioxide is implicated in formation of acid rain and has a choking odour. Derived from coal tar; all sulphur drugs are toxic and restricted in use (in USA, FDA** prohibits their use on raw fruits and vegetables), produced by combustion of sulphur, hydrogen sulphide or gypsum; known to provoke gastric irritation, nausea, diarrhoea, skin rash, asthma attacks and difficult to metabolise for those with impaired kidney function, also destroys vitamin B1 (thiamin), and should be avoided by anyone suffering from conjunctivitis, bronchitis, emphysema, bronchial asthma, or cardiovascular disease. Typical products are beer, soft drinks, dried fruit, juices, cordials, wine, vinegar, potato products. Similar functional properties are displayed by the sulphites (E221-E227). Other names: sulphur superoxide.

    Hope this helps

220 in wine makes my mother's asthma flare up. It gives me a massive headache too.

I would steer clear of ANY preservatives in a bubby so tiny - like others have said I can't have 220 either I get a massive headache...

Oats can also be a problem - some people cannot tolerate oats so it could also be that...

You can get naturally dried fruit that doesn't use any "numbers" to dry them. I use these in my hosue as the whole drying of fruit scenario is pretty unhealthy if you read up on it...

Maybe try him with natural oats - just 100% oats - if he still has the reaction I would say the culprit is the oats... Otherwise it might be the dried fruit and preservatives... HTH

DS1 has a sulphur allergy. He used to react to fruit in yoghurt when younger, but now can eat dried fruit ok. But we discovered what he was allergic to one day when he was on bactrim antibiotics which contains sulphur - he came out in hives.

you should look at that fedup website (i'm not sure of the address- but if you google australia "fedup" it should come up) there is a fact sheet on 220, plus the levels of sulfites in dried fruit. Interesting.

Here is my yummy apple cinnamon porridge (serves 3-4)
1 cup oats (not quick oats bleagh! but maybe if you prefer them)
1 cup water (cold, not hot)
    1 1/2 cups milk
    1 grated apple
1 tsp cinnamon (to taste - I just stick in a bit of cinnamon scroll)
--- bring to boil, stirring ---
turn temp to low, add in a dob of butter and a dob of honey, keep stirring until it thickens to porridge consistancy. It takes a while but is really yummy when its ready. If you stir with a large wisk, it goes extra fluffy.
