Big Boy Beds - Where/Budget/Mattress Or Ensemble

DS is almost 17 months and we think he might be ready to move out of his cot into a bed. I've thought of Bedshed but I'd love some more suggestions.

How much do they generally cost? And should we get a mattress on slats or an ensemble?

    TIA!

We got this from Toys R Us, http://forums.bellybelly.com.au/foru...php?photo=3936

But I would warn you NOT to get one with WOODEN guard rails as you can see in our picture. My DS was standing on his bed, and went to step or sit down and fell face first on the wooden rail. Athough the edges are rounded it was sharp enough to gash his chin and we had to go to the emergency room for stiches. This is a popular childrens bed that I've seen in other shops but I don't think wooden guard rails are safe no matter how round or buffed they are. As soon as he had the accident we removed the rails, and he uses it without. In fact it would have done a lot less damage if he simple fell off on to the floor without rails as the bed is barely 30cm off the carpet.

So with DS2 we bought a metal pipeline style toddler bed - there is no way that landing on pipeline so thick could peirce his skin. We plan to put him in it without a guard rail, I'm sure after rolling on to the floor a few times he'll soon learn and its much safer than falling on to a dangerous rail. Although i know you can buy plastic rails which attach, after our experience i'm just not a fan.

Not making room in the cot for another one are we Sequoia?!! tehe

We just bought one of those smaller kids beds (low to the floor, and smaller then a normal single I mean) from Baby Road, but we haven't even put miss L in it yet!..going to do it this weekend!..

That pic of Matryoshka's looks good!

Hope it all goes smoothly and he loves a big boy bed! x

My Ds is almost 18mths and we have just bought a bed and trundler set from fantastic furniture. It didnt include mattresses but it was $269 for the set. We have a decent mattress that we can use and then will get another one for the trundler.
He will be usung the trundler bed at first(its really low to the ground so he can get on and off himself and for the falling factor as well) to get him used to the big boys bed then when he is ready or wants to he can move to the bigger one and we have a spare bed.

We had to get a themed/brightly coloured bed to entice DS1 in to it because we had co-slept with him for over 2 years in our bed, so making the transition was really hard. But because the bed was so cute it did appeal to him. But I would probably have gotten something more neutral if that wasn't the case because he's 3+ now and not really in to winnie the pooh, so will be getting him another new bed anyway. Probably go for a king single that will see him in to his teens.

I plan on DS being in cot until 20 months or there abouts and then putting him into a king single.

As this way he doesnt get moved out of cot as soon as new baby arrives but also sees baby in bassinet and then after 3 - 4 months into cot, by this stage he should be happy in his big boy bed.

My other issue will be he has been in grobags since 9 weeks how do kids go whne put into a bed with a doona. As currently he is always warm and can move where ever he wants.

That's the thing though Feeb, DS is getting too big for his grobag and really does seem restricted. He loves pillows and the doona in our bed so I think he is ready.

Oh ok as DS is tall but seems to be ok still in 6 - 18 month size so far, we have some dreambags as well maybe they are a bit longer not sure.

DS when i our bed plays peek a boo with doona!!

    Good luck with transition

My DD2 has been in a big girl bed since 15 months. She wants to be with her big sister, who is 2, and simply wouldn't settle in a cot anymore.

We got both the girls a bed frame from Freedom - cost $150 each on sale - and then a good mattress from Bedshed. DD2 has bed rails that we got from Toys R Us.

I think a king single is a great idea. We spend a good deal of time in one or other of the girls' beds and the extra space would be nice - and if its like that now imagine what it will be like with a 5 year old!!

We got DS1 a king single ensemble from harvey normans as we figured he would grow into it and would last him until he moves out of home!

How does an ensemble go with a bedhead? Do you just push the bed up to the bedhead?

It was called an ensemble because it came with a chest of drawers, side drawers, book case and bedhead/end! we then had to buy the mattress! (Sorry it is a bedroom set not ensemble! DF called it and ensemble!)

This is Master J's bedroom set and we will be getting it for master M and Master L!
