Working out whether to buy a new pram and if so what one. So my question is when did your toddler stopped using the pram and just walked with you for trips the shops and outings, etc?
I still use a stroller about half the time. DS is a good walker by now, but has a tendency to try to escape, so I like to make my life a bit easier and strap him in sometimes . I am making a concerted effort to let him walk if we're only going to be a little while, less than half an hour. But anything longer than that and he still goes in the stroller (or a trolley).

Definitely depends on your toddler and what you use the pram for. DD1 has been able to walk in the shops for about 30 mins etc since about 20months but even now at almost 3.5 she gets tired unexpectedly sometimes. I like walking to the shops\park\beach and try to leave the car at home and will walk for an hour at least each day - so we got a double pram for that. That one was definitely about me though! I have a nearly 17 mth old, excellect walker, really steady on his feet but i still use the pram for long walks, shops, meeting with friends etc. or else he would try to espace and run off, i would always have to be watching him and chasing him, around the shops he would get knocked ova by the many people and run up to every ride so he stays in his pram or a trolley.
I really think this will depend upon your toddler & your lifestyle. Charlie is now 2.5yrs old & we still use both pram or stroller. I walk each day with him, especially when DH is away for work (that's alot)...like today we did two 1hr walks, in the morn & in the arvo. So I need my pram for that & am looking at getting a double for that reason. If I am down the street & know I need to go in & out of a few shops & buy some things & can't hang onto him also he goes in the stroller or trolley.
He's also gets tired still sometimes & often will take a run for it......I try to get him to walk when I can to teach him but it's not always practical.
We also travel a lot, so if we are going to be away or at the zoo or something like that think I would still like something for a bit. I'm currently looking on ebay, I would get a double stroller but they don't carry the weight capacity I need.
DS1 has not used one since he was about 3 I guess, and even then it was only occassional. DS2 has not used a stroller much at all - we had the P&Ts with toddler seat but I mostly carried him in the sling for the first 12 months, then he probably used it for 6 months or so and then walked everywhere. Really, we could probably have managed with a single stroller if we hadn't had the double.
My 22 month old hated the pram from a really young age and we went at least 6 months without using it at all he would walk or be in the shopping trolley or be carried, its only now he will finally sit in it for me and only if he is tired from walking too far or if I am going on a powerwalk he will sit for a while. He is starting to run from me though so will be using it more I think. I want to get a Peg Perego P3 they have an inbuilt toddler step on the back so my plan is if he wont sit in it he might at least stand on the back sometimes (with shopping in the seat). And then I will already have it for number 2.
Thanks everyone My current pram doesn't take a toddler seat so we're thinking of getting a new one that does. At first I was thinking a tandem or side by side pram but then I also intend to wear the new baby in a sling alot and I wasn't sure how much longer DS would be in a pram. But then I also want something that I can go walking with them both and DS and baby would need to be in a pram for that.
So now I think I am leaning towards a new pram that will take a toddler seat like the Valco or the P&T's. That way if I'm wearing the baby, DS can go in the pram. Or if DS is walking baby can go in pram or they both can go in and I won't be pushing a big empty double pram around looking silly! Hmm decisions, decisions!
I have a 22month old and we still use an umbrella stroller which we leave in the trunk of the car at all times. He likes to walk for a bit but he gets pretty cranky after a short time and then wants to be carried (he's much to heavy now to carry for too long). He LOVES riding in the stroller and gets so happy when I pull it out. Since he likes to run away sometimes the stroller is great to contain him.
It depends on the child too though. I babysit a little girl who just turned 2 and I wouldn't bother using a stroller for her as she likes to walk and never strays more than a few feet from you.
DD is two and from the age of 14months we got her this smart trike from toys r us that starts as a stroller then as she got bigger we removed parts of the stroller to make it become a tricycle. Now she is 2 we have removed the handle of the trike and she rides it all alone...made the weening off the stroller much much easier.
I have the Valco ultralite with the toddler seat that comes off, and I love it. Its not too wide like the double/tandems, its light and there is a sunshade for DD1 as she hates the sun on her face..
DD1 was 20 months when DD2 was born and was not ready to walk everywhere. She didn't nap anymore but would get tired walking. 6 months later she walks pretty much everywhere but on the odd occasion she wants to hop up, its also handy when she runs riot I can put her in the seat.
My DD was 3 in June, and there are still times now when either I am in a hurry or when we are out for long stretches of the day that she will still hop in the pram. We have a P &T and I usually put DS in the top and then DD will hop in and out of the back when she has had enough.
