Hi all. DS Logan is in a reward facing car seat at the moment. Over the past week or so, he has been pulling himself up so he can sit straight. He does this when he's on my knee, in the pram, and in the car seat.
He gets cranky when he cant sit up in his car seat. I really dont want to turn the seat around yet as he is waaaaay to young, but car trips are becoming something he doesnt like. I have a mirror on the headrest so he can see himself, and he has toys, and his brother is next to him.
The mirror works for most kids, so you are doing all the right things! Have you checked to see whether he needs the straps adjusted - that might be part of it.
Certainly he is too young to turn around - at a minimum I think they need to be 8kg and 6 months, but rear facing is much safer so it's best to leave them a lot longer than that. Check your seat specs, but most are safe rear-facing until 12 kgs. Our DS2 was nearly 2 before he got too big and we had to turn him round. But it is easier with the second too - they love being rear facing because they can see their sibling.
Maybe that's another tip for you - when you have two adults in the car, maybe one could sit in the back to keep him company?
MantaRay- Thanks for replying. He is about 6.5kg now. I would like to hold off turning him around for as long as possible. Jake sits next to his seat in the car, so he has someone to talk to. Zac is on the other side of Jake, so hes the only one that cant talk to him. Ive checked his straps, and they seem ok. They go from above his shoulders, so they are high enough. He has always been a 'nosy' baby, wanting to know whats going on, so Im sorta presuming he just wants to sit up like everyone else, so he can see more.
DS went through this also at around the same age. We had the mirror, toys etc but he was just not happy about being in the car and would try and sit up etc. He is a big bub and was 8kg by that time so i was tempted to turn him around but im glad we didn't because as quickly as he started hating the car he started liking it again. The only thing i did was get some classical baby music which seemed to soothe him if he was having a good old scream in the car. I also got a cd that we used to play in his room when he was a newborn and played that in the car. It was a bit hit and miss as to whether it would work though. He now likes the car again and will actually fall asleep in the car. At the moment he is almost 11kg so ill have to turn him around prob in a couple months but for now i am happy to leave him be as he actually likes being in the car again! My advice is to just keep at it and keep driving. Also see if any music will soothe him and if worse comes to worse turn the music up and sing your lungs out! Hopefully it will shock him so much he will stop crying!
