We found out this week we are expecting another boy, which has put my head into a spin as I'm now trying to find a boys name I like...so I will probably be in this Baby Names threads alot over the next 4-5months. I already got to use my favourite boys name on my first son, Cameron. I'd started to prepare for the possibilty of another boy a few weeks ago and kept coming back to Joshua, but I didn't want a name too popular, so kept trying to put it out of my mind. But now, knowing we are a having a boy, its the only name at this stage that keeps popping out at me.
So it got me thinking, how popular is it. I know the baby name register all around Australia (and even the US) have had Joshua as a top 5 (usually 1, 2 or 3 though) for the last 15 years, but I'm having trouble finding any Joshua's I actually know. The only one I can think of is a boy I went to school with (and thats over 12 years ago) and a few that I occassionally see at work (and I see ALOT of customers names in my job, probably at least 100 a da, but rarely a Joshua).
So I'm just wondering how many Joshua's do you know of? Is it really as popular as its suppose to be?
Thank you for your help...I'm sure I'll be back with other opinions on names
Well I love the name cause we had it picked out if we had a boy but never got to use it.
Yeah apparantly in paper awhile back it was in the top 10 names but I don't know any either.
In my school of 380 kids kindy to yr 6 there are only 5 Joshuas, we have a lot more Jacobs and Lachlans than that.
I have a cousin Joshua but he is 22.
I love the name, its classic without being overcommon.
Thanks everyone, this is helping alot so far. Its amazing how Joshua's meant to be so popular (on the NSW births registry its been used about 1000 times a year - give or take, since 1994), but yet there doesn't seem to be too many around, they must be really spread across NSW. I'm in QLD and going by the register up here its been really popular for the last 2 years at least too (in the top 10 anyway)
Eluned...I just realised who you were, the new name got me . I just remembered when you did your birth announcement in our last belly buddies thread and I thought back then that it was a nice name.
I've always had a liking to the name Joshua, hmm, maybe this picking another boy's name isn't as hard as I thought I might be.
Still keep your input coming. As I'm still interested to see how many Joshua's people know though.
I live in a town of i think 100,000 population now and fady names are a big hit here ... and i can honestly say from my experience (and ear listening ) that JOSHUA is NOT that popular to the point i have only ever met two in all of my life (and that's a long time, LOL )
... I reckon JOSHUA is a handsome gorgeous name for a boy or man in adulthood
I think Joshua is a gorgeous name-not too old fashiooned and not too trendy! I can only think of 2 that's I've known-1 was at school so would now be around 30 and the other is a former co-worker's son who is now 6. I live an a city of around 40,000 people and I've been scouring the baby announcements since before we started TCC. I have only seen a handful of Joshua's-the most common boys names I've seen are Lachlan, Jacob and William.
I am married to a Joshua and know of several others of all different ages, starting from 26 down to bubbies. It's a gorgeous name and goes so nicely with Cameron.
joshua has always been my favourite boys name - however it is now my ex's name and no longer suitable for me to name my son that lol.. would be a bit strange... I have come across quite alot of Joshua's..... there are probably 5 that i can think of off the top of my head... however there is a huge age gap between them... most are between 20-30yr old age range... and the others are down around the 6yr old mark.... i dont think its overly as popular as it was when i went to school.
I think a couple of years ago it was very popular. It felt like every other person I knew having a baby was calling their baby Joshua.
However since then I haven't heard it much at all. I haven't met any Joshuas since having my kids.
