    Oh my god! Being induced!

It's so surreal! Unless something happens naturally today I will be induced this time tomorrow morning! In some ways I really hope I go naturally today but I am not at all unhappy about my decision to be induced because I don't I could stand being pregnant with pre-labour signs any longer!

If I hadn't had those signs (irregular contractions, loss of mucus plug, 3cm dilates) I prob would have continued on my merry way for a while but the last 5 days I have practically been house-bound with a few short trips and no fun plans just in case I did go into labour.

    Few questions:
    1. How long after you were induced did you actually give birth?
    2. Once you had the gel on did you also have your waters broken or did they wait a bit?
    3. How bad is it really having waters broken?

I guess that is my main concern - being in intense pain because it was brought on. I always said I didn't want to be induced becuse I heard it was far more intense but now that I am here I don't mind too much!

It's also exciting cause only our parents and about 2 friends know it's tomorrow. Keeping it a surprise! And I love the date - 29-09-09! Not as good as 09-09-09 but close enough!

    Hi Jordie
It's scary but also exciting isn't it!
    To answer your questions:

    Few questions:
    1. How long after you were induced did you actually give birth?
1st: - 17 hours, but labour didn't actually start until about 12 hours into it.
    2nd: - 8 hours
    3rd: - 4 hours

    2. Once you had the gel on did you also have your waters broken or did they wait a bit?
I had my waters broken with all three, but not straight away, probably a few hours after the gel was inserted.
    3. How bad is it really having waters broken?
I must admit, it wasn't pleasant, but doesn't last too long.

With my first used gas and had a shot of pethadine, with my second I used the gas,
and with my third I used a minimal amount of gas. sure, it was painful, but I have nothing to compare it to. In saying that, it was a pain I could handle (with a bit of moaning and groaning )

Best of luck - I hope everything goes beautifully for you.

    Hi Jordie,

First of all, how exciting!! (and scary too!) - Rudy induced me me too I went in on the tuesday afternoon (20.01.09) at 2.30pm had the first of lot gels inserted at 3pm and monitored for an hour. Was told to rest up and relax (yeah right!) - Anyway, started with a few slight contractions, nothing to write home about. At 9pm another lot of gels were inserted and monitored again for another hour - cramps were starting to get a bit more intense but nothing i couldn't breathe through - i was told to get some sleep as waters would be broken at 8am the next morning and drip started(Wednesday 21 Jan 09) - Anyway, i guess my DD had other plans, cause my waters broke on their own at 1.00am and i was in labour for 7 hours with DD born at 8.00am on 21.109! So i never had the drip or had my waters broken, my body did it on its own and i had no pain relief and birthed vaginally (no tears yaay!) with no assistance other than Rudy telling me when to stop pushing!. - As it was my first pregnancy i cant compare it to going into labour naturally, but i can say mine was a positive induction and not a "horrendous cascade of intervention".

Goodluck! - Rudy will look after you, he was FANTASTIC

Thanks girls!!! Good to hear such positive stories!

Jazahmum - is it unusual to have 3 inductions?
Cookalooks - glad to hear you loved Rudy too!

I didn't really think that labour would take so long after being induced! Maybe I won't get my cool date afterall!! I might go and buy some magazines today if it looks like we'll be sitting around!

Jordie - I was induced due to high blood pressure with all three births. Forgot to add, that I also didn't tear, and babies attached and fed beautifully right from the word go
Hopefully they will only have to insert the gels for you.
What time do you have to go in tomorrow? With my first it was midnight (ob wanted to make sure I had all the time in hospital that I was allowed to (with private insurance)
That was tiring, as I couldn't sleep at all - I was so excited!

I really didn't mind having my waters broken, i certainly didn't find it painful at all. It did make the cx more intense but the process of having it done was no issue for me.
What did make labour more intense was the syntocin drip.

I am guessing because you are showing all the signs that your body is almost ready it wont take too much to convince your body to go into labour. You might find you only need a bit of gel or your waters broken and things will progress well.

I went into labour spontaneously the night before i was due to be induced with DD2. So you never know what the next 24 hours will bring. However it works out.......... how exciting! You're going to meet you new baby in the next 48 hours! Wooot! Good luck.

I also had 3 inductions. You'll be fine.

    1. How long after you were induced did you actually give birth?

1st - 5 hrs after the drip was inserted
2nd- 2 hrs after drip inserted
3rd- 56 mins after drip inserted

    2. Once you had the gel on did you also have your waters broken or did they wait a bit?

I only had the gel with my 3rd the night before the induction. The next morning they broke my waters and inserted the drip.

    3. How bad is it really having waters broken?

It doesn't hurt at all. It's more embarrassing having a Dr's head between your legs.

Hi JordieC, I was induced with DS2, I didn't have the gel, my waters had already broken hours before things just weren't happening quick enough for the staff at the hospital so they ended up inducing with the syntocin drip. I don't mean to scare you but it was very intense from the first contraction, but from the start of the drip to DS being born was 1hr 45mins, only a couple of stitches.
Hope you get your cool date 29/9 is my birthday too..not 2009 obiously
    Good luck

I was induced with #2 and it was great!

I got the gel (my cervix was closed and posterior - so nowhere near thinking of havign a bub) and within 45 mins onf having the gel i was having contractions I had her 4 hours later. I managed a natural birth, my waters werent even broken that happened just before she slipped out! It was more painful than my non-induced labour but still managable and she was even posterior, but i was determined to not have any drugs (i don't react well )

good luck and remembe to go with the flow! your body knows what to do

Firstly how exciting to know it's happening! Good luck though, I hope it happens naturally for you....

    Few Answers....

    1. How long after you were induced did you actually give birth?
Drip started at 7am DS arrived at 3:55pm
    2. Once you had the gel on did you also have your waters broken or did they wait a bit?
I had gel inserted at two times the night before, it didn't work for me (it did for the lady in the next room though). I had my waters broken the next day after the drip was already started
    3. How bad is it really having waters broken?
It wasn't an enjoyable experience from what I can remember. They scratched the cr@p out of DS's head and I complained to the doctor that he could "stop digging for gold"

I was 9 days overdue and had not even had a single braxton hicks contraction the entire pregnancy. Needless to say DS is still a mummy's boy. I was glad I was enduced, albeit it was painful enough for me to want an epidural..... My body had not warmed up AT ALL!!

how exciting jordie - it's nearly time!!

    1. How long after you were induced did you actually give birth? my waters were broken at around 7am (i think!), the drip went in within an hour & i gave birth at 5.48pm - so just under 10 hours. mine was an assisted delivery (forceps) because DS' heartrate was dropping.
    2. Once you had the gel on did you also have your waters broken or did they wait a bit? i had the cervidil pessary put in at about 6pm the night before & they monitored me for a couple of hours & then off and on overnight. when i hadn't progressed to regular contractions by 6am & my waters hadn't broken, they decided to break my waters.
    3. How bad is it really having waters broken? i found it more uncomfortable than anything else. an ob did it first but didn't get it right so a m/w did it. it was like a rubber glove with a small hook at the end.

    good luck tomorrow

    1. How long after you were induced did you actually give birth?
Well, if we're counting from the first application of the gel, then it was like two full days. If we're counting from when they started me on the drip and popped my water-bag, around four hours. Gel didn't even budge my cervix.

    2. Once you had the gel on did you also have your waters broken or did they wait a bit?
See above. Had two applications of gel, not a millimetre of difference over 36 hours, so they just put me on a drip, broke my waters and in around 10 mins I went from 0 to 10cm and started pushing.

    3. How bad is it really having waters broken?
Not bad at all. Not painful, if that's what you're worried about. I had my waters broken with both DD1 and DD2 (DD2 was a spontaneous labour but I was at 10cm for over an hour and no sign of any further progress because my waters were intact, so I asked the mw to break them to get things moving), and it was fine. DD1 there was a pop and a HUGE gush of fluid (all over the student midwife, oops), DD2 just a little gush and then things were moving spectacularly.

HTH Good luck with your induction!! The intense pains only come about if you're on the drip, and the synto induces your uterus to contract - if you manage to avoid it and just go with the gel, your body will do the rest naturally and it will only be as painful as a natural labour (which, from memory, is a lot easier and less intense). Try not to get too excited about the date, I was admitted and expected DD1's birth date to be 09/08/07 but nobody told me the gel might not work, so it ended up being nearly two days later
    Wishing you all the best!

I can't help you out any here, but I just wanted to come in and wish you all the very best with the pending birth. Take comfort in the knowing that you will be meeting you baby today or tomorrow. How ever the labour starts, it will definately be over tomorrow!
GL... I can't wait to see the birth announcement!!!

    1. How long after you were induced did you actually give birth? I was given a dose of gels at 8:30pm and gave birth at 4:30 am so 8 hours. Rough time line was crampy pain started at midnight, waters broke and more intense contractions at 2am, 10cm dilated at 4am.
    2. Once you had the gel on did you also have your waters broken or did they wait a bit? I was going to have a second lot of gels at 5am and my ob was going to come back and break my waters at 8am, so almost 12 hours later, but it was all done and dusted by then!
    3. How bad is it really having waters broken? n/a
I should point out my family has a history of quick dilation so I may have been quicker than the average.

    Few questions:
    1. How long after you were induced did you actually give birth?
16 hours, i was given 2 doses of gel. and monitored. i also wasnt dilated at all, i was enduced for pre eclampsia.

    2. Once you had the gel on did you also have your waters broken or did they wait a bit?
my waters wernt broken, that happened after 14 hours of labour and no progression and i got my epidural and they spontaiously ruptured, think my body relaxed i was very nervous and in alot of pain.
    3. How bad is it really having waters broken?
have been told as painfull as an internal. but i didnt get mine.

i can say the contractuions were hard and fast from the begining but i was able to shower and rock through them till exhaustion set in at 2 am.
