A girl friend of my mine who has 2 children has a one year old who since about 8 or 9 months has experienced high speration anxiety. He is also throws the most AWFUL tantrums. I'm talking 3 in one hour that all lasted a good 15 minutes each. Nothing will calm him down - NOTHING! It's quite distressing to watch and my friend is really starting to worry.
She's a good mum - she does all the "right" things like ignoring, showing lots of love and offering alternatives to the things he wanted but it's just not working. I suggested speaking to her health nurse but she just said it was a phase. I know this is prob true but I'm wondering if she should see her doc because honestly it is so bad it's making it very difficult for her to accomplish anything.
He does have his good days of course but these are beyond any tantrums I have ever seen. Any iedas or advice would be great.
Sounds like DS. He had the most horrible tantrums from about that age, and it continued till... uh... a little while ago? LOL
He's much better now - it really really got awful at 14 months though - he was horrible.. I just wanted to sell him. I'm sure I wrote threads about it!!!
Going from that description, I would say that it is normal, and just a phase, and I hope it doesn't last as long as his did with me. I just put him in the sling a LOT of the time (even though I was pregnant with Miss M at the time) and he eventually got to the stage that I could walk out of the room without throwing a tantie. Now Miss M is at that stage - so its most fun!!!
Sounds normal to me, my DS was similar. He could either do multiple 10-15 minute tanties or full hour long ones. No amount of distracting worked, I just had to wait until he was done (offering a cuddle or an alternative every few minutes). I think they started around 17 months and he is just stopping now.
