    Suddenly Dairy and Wheat free...HELP!!!

I always seem to be run down and feeling ill and while at the doctors the other day for DD i mentioned it to my Doc and she made an appointment for me, I went today and was told i should NOT be eating DAIRY or WHEAT!!!! i have NO idea about cooking or eating without these things....i eat alot...i mean ALOT of DAIRY and bread and pasta.
Im now sitting at home with a fridge full of stuff ive been told not to eat!!

SO....all those out there who have been doing this for a while, i would love some help!! DH said he would do it with me so i dont have to make two meals all the time, DD eats what we eat, but il carry on giving her dairy etc.

Ive googled a few things but it all seems so confusing! and i dont have time to sit on the computer all afternoon trying to get my head around it!

I know what i cant eat with Dairy and im not keen on soy + its so expencive and i know that some other things have dairy in them, but some good ideas for replacing wheat would be great.

    Thanks in advance.

Were you given a reason? did they at least do some tests?
there is a blog called gluten free girl which will help with the wheat free thing, there are a lot of gluten free recipes there. I don't know about dairy but I'm sure someone will be able to point you in the right direction.

Im going for some propper tests in a few weeks but in the mean time she told me to avoid them. i dont know but if it makes me feel better im willing to give it a shot. she was a bit dismisive about it really. like i should know not to be eating this stuff already!
after a bit more reading i have decided im going to keep a food diary and do my very best to cut these this out, but if i do eat something i shoudnt atleast i will have it writen down and il know if it made me feel bad. we will see. thanks pixie

If you dont like soy, have you tried rice milk? My sister used to be allerigic to dairy, wheat and soy amongst other things, and me being the chef of the family had to find some foods for her to eat.
Gluten free flours are EXPENSIVE I use almond meal or hazelnut meal, I manage to buy a kilo of that for 10 dollars at cash & carry.
There are many things you can eat, my sister ended up putting on 20kg when she couldnt eat certain things because I made her so much foods. Just try to use more fruits and veges in things. Julie Stafford has some great books with heaps of recipes. She wrote them after her husband got diagnosed with cancer, determined that eating healthier foods would cure him. And it did.
Other dairy substitutes.. Goats feta, canola spread instead of butter, Im pretty sure that there is also a dairy free tasty cheese you can get. Dont know where from though.
Hope this helps. If you need any recipes, let me know. Ive got a wheat free/dairy free chocolate cake that I make for my shop (secret recipe) but I'll let u have it.

I'm in a dairy free house, but most of our dinners are wheat free as well

Good ol' meat & 3 veg can work easy, as well as stir fry's, roast, indian curry's and curry's using coconut milk, laksa with rice noodles..... the list goes on and on We've been dairy free and gluten limited for 3 years in our house.

Most of my baking is with wheat however, I have done it with gluten free flour, but I much prefer a mix of different flours like potato/rice and linseeds ground... it seems to have a better texture. Things like lemon merangue with a small crust base using the gluten/dairy free ginger nut biscuits from the health food isle works marvels to get around a yummy desert that is gluten/dairy free.

My girls are also intolerant to soy, so we use rice milk in baking and on cereals here, as well as nuttlex instead of butter in all of our cooking. There's an awesome cereal in the health food isle called crunchola which is gluten free.... its sooooo yummy!!! I eat it.

Dairy= cow. So you can have goat and sheep cheese as well as milk. Rice milk isn't too bad. We have a lot of merediths goat cheese b/c it's delicious! You can buy hard goats cheeses from most deli's. They most often give you a taste before you buy if you ask. If is $$$ but i find the flavor quite strong so don't use as much.

You can have rice or potatoes in place of pasta. There are loads of gluten free (gluten is the protein in wheat) things in the supermarket, and often the mark GF things on a menu if you eat out.

thanks SO much all, one more question. Chocolate...if i get the 70/80% stuff that says it has no milk solids in it is that ok. it has cocoa butter but that doesnt mean normal butter does it??? will definatley try that cereal, ive bought two so far and cant stomach either...both taste like card board, i guess rice milk takes a while to get used to cause im not enjoying it but i think il try goats milk. a few days innow and not doing to bad. my shopping bill actually was less this week!!

Brookfarm has a gluten free muesli, that might be ok cause their other ones are yum. Expensive though. But could be worth a try.

There is an awesome dairy free chocolate made by Bonvita, but it is super $$$$. i think about $7 for a small block. You can get it at health food stores (not many though) or on line at allergyblock. You can also get heaps of other GF/dairy free things here. The best bit is you just put in that you can't have x,y and z and it gives you a list of things you can have. Flat rate delivery Aus wide. If you ever need help, i have found them really helpful on the phone too.

The dark choc with no milk solids is ok, but i don't like the taste much!

Yep, I'll second the Bonvita choc, it's great . My DS loves it, particularly the milk one. I personally love the 70% stuff, and always preferred it even before going dairy free.

Dinner stuff isn't too hard I don't think (thinks meat and veg, casseroles), but snacks can be tricky. Do you like things like rice cakes? Fruit and veg are always safe .

so much good advice ladies, thanks so much. im finding breakfast the hardest cause i ALWAYS have a bowl of cereal, its like my coffee, my day just doesnt start right without a bowl of cereal!! but il find the right stuff, just trial and error i think. i normally just have the corn thins with avo and tomatoe, or tuna lettuce cups for lunch anyway....just would normally have cheese with them! so that hasnt been too hard, and dinners fine so far. bought a few recipie books to get me started and all looks good. even got a good choc cake recipie to keep me going!! ( thanks poopie )

How long do you think you would have to be dairy/Gluten free for to notice any difference or improvement??

I might be wrong about this, but I thought that the allergy tests only showed up a positive if you were actually eating the gluten for example. I'm not sure if thats the blood test or what, I've just read it somewhere - because if you aren't eating gluten there won't be any antibodies in your blood??. There is one test that looks at the villi in you stomach and I think that is supposed to be more accurate.
I suppose if you are feeling better after a few weeks then that will be the best indicator.

I'm actually thinking of joining you in a few weeks when I finish uni (only I just realised then I will be going away for two weeks, then it will be christmas).
So thanks for the goats milk suggestion, I had forgotten about it, and was trying to figure out what to have in smoothies.
    Any other breakfast suggestions?
    All I have is:
    scrambled eggs and kale
    smoothie
    fruit salad.
Have you found any nice gluten free breads?

Heliana, I think you're thinking of the tests for coeliac disease, which is totally different to being wheat intolerant. Coeliacs are unable to tolerate gluten, which is a protein that is part of wheat (and other grains). The effects on the body are quite different to those of wheat intolerance.

Sorry to be so brief, it's mad hour here, hopefully someone else will elaborate.

i have my bowl of cereal and goats milk for breakfast every day...no variation lol, but ive always been the same!!
my local bakery does a gluten free bread, $8 for a tiny loaf!!! and its YUCK. ended up making bread and butter puddind with it cause it wasnt good for much else!! but the pudding is Great!!
its actually not as much of an issue as i thought it would be, i find it hard not eating cheese...oh i love cheese! had cravings for big glasses of cold milk so i started taking calcium tablets...solved that one!
The symptoms i was having that made me go wheat and dairy free have all but gone, and also other things which i had just taken for granted as 'normal' have gone too, i must admit i feel SO much better now. I had a few chocolate treats the other day at a birthday party and i knew about it! lol.
It turns out im not alergic to wheat or dairy, so i dont have to be really picky about items that have traces in them, but its made a big difference to my general heath!! worth doing if your think about it!!
