Heel ***** Test Results

Hi All,

my little guy is 2 weeks old, and I just got told by the hospital that they have to re-do his heel ***** test because the results were in the normal range, but 'on the low side'.

Does anyone know what this could mean if the results were correct and too low? I'm so beside myself with worry now.

I've had a horrible experience up until now (pre-eclampsia, emergency ceasarian and an infected suture wound) and I'm still in hospital 2 weeks on, but all of the problems have been with me, and my little man has been perfect. I really

To be honest I have no idea but my experience with lots of tests that they redo them if there is ANY mistake, misreading, low/high reading etc. just to be sure. So you may find it's just a precaution. It's a good thing they are doing ti again cause then they can inform you properly of what's going on. Try not to stress - duh I know how hard that is but I'm sure evreything will be okay. Hugs to you

From what I understand the heel pr*ck test is to check for easily rectifyable problems a bubs may have, if it is picked up really early. That is why they check all new borns at birth. Like JordieC said they may just be double checking, and it is always better to double check and be safe than to let it go. Hope it turns out that there was something with the test and your little one is fine.

Aww hun big hugs, I know exactly what you're going through right now. DD2's heel-test results came back with a 'suspicious gene' which warranted further testing - for cystic fibrosis. Thankfully those results came back all clear (although I'm thinking of talking to my doctor again soon because she's had a nasty cough and lots of crap on her lungs for weeks now and I'm worried the tests may not have been accurate), and the doctors explained that the heel tests are very sensitivie and that 90% of the time, further testing comes back all clear and it's just a way of double-checking.
I don't know what 'on the low side' means (low side of what? I was just told a 'suspicious gene' meaning cystic fibrosis was a possibility was found, they gave me that info straight away), but I really hope that it's a false alarm and that there's nothing amiss. Good luck!! I know it's hell waiting for more tests and then waiting for those results... I really hope it all goes well for you.

oh hun- it mit ejust mean that the nurse didnt get enough blood or placed it incorreclty- - try not to stress too much but i reallly inderstand where youa re coming form

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

After talking to the nurse / midwife who took the second blood sample, it looks as though the person who took the sample the first time may not have done it correctly. She had to squeeze his heel a lot to get the sample, and apparently that can dilute the sample.

I'm still concerned about the results, but stressing about it in the mean time isn't going to do a thing, so I just have to wait and see, and try not to think too much about it.

There was some abnormalities with my lil one's heel test but i was told that it was nothing to worry about and that sometimes the cards can get pushed together causing glitches. Was all good and just a mistake

Thanks CrazyLady - that's exactly the reassurance that I needed to hear. I get so paranoid, and I'm so scared that something will be wrong. I'm glad that everyone turned out well for you.
