When to stop nappy wearing at nightime ?? ... Approx what age ??

Hi all,

Well, DD has been toilet trained for sometime now and i never thought about what age to stop my 3year old DD from wearing a nappy when she has her arvo sleep or nightime sleep ... Anyway, about 2weeks ago i thought well it's been at least a couple of months since i've noticed a slightly wet nappy at all even in the morn when she awakes so yeh it's now been a couple of weeks with absolutely no nappy ... mind you i'm still prepared for a bed wet at some point which got me curious what is the ' usual ' age (if there is one) for when a child stops wearing nappies at all ??

My 2 eldest were over 4 and Ds3 was 27 months.. His choice to do so lol..

I think it is us as Parents that hold them back.. It was for us anyways. I simply didn't want to be up changing wet sheets in the middle of the night..

If you have a dry nappy every morning (or close to every) then it might be time to trial it

thanks Nic ... yeh i think that's why i didn't do it earlier as didn't want to face the changing sheets every night (and also having a hard time letting go of my baby girl years seeing she is my only child) ... so, yeh so far so good the past couple of weeks (and the sheets are ready on standby each night ... oh and yeh have a waterproof mattress protector on all this time of course)

Fingers crossed it stays good and dry.

I just hated the whole wet bed in the middle of the night.. and then you usually had to shower them cus they were wet everywhere.. ugh

DD1 was 3 & 4 months. We forgot she took it off & just left it off when she was dry next morning. Loads of accidents though.

DD2 only just stopped the night nappies at about 4 & 3 months? She really wasn't ready til then, & has had way less accidents for her age than DD1 had. DD1 was often more than once a week, DD2 might be once every 2 months.

My neice was out of them at just over 2 though. All depends on the child

My DD has been out of night nappies since she started using the toilet full stop. I tried putting one on her but she would get upset and take it off. She is 2yrs 5months now and has been out of nappies for almost 4months day and night. She has had two accidents during the day whilst playing with other kids but never an accident at night. She must have a monster bladder as she doesn't even wee when she gets up in the morning.
Eldest DD was out of nappies during the day before she was 2 but it wasn't until she was 3 that she stopped wearing a night nappy.

I don't think there is a 'usual' age and I think it's dangerous to look for one

My DD was 24months when she TT completely and not a wet bed ever. DS1 however is 5 and although he's not in nappies anymore (only in the last 6 months he stopped) he has a wet bed 4 nights out of the week. It surprised me as DS1 is a very intelligent kid and he's always not been a problem to learn things but bladder control is NOT his strong point

DD1 fully trained day and night the same day, 2.5yrs, we kept night nappies on for two weeks, all dry, then stopped, shes had two accidents in 6 months.
i think it was nai that told me a great tip (although ive never had to do it) and that was to make the bed up as follows:
mattress protector-fitted sheet- mattress protector-fitted sheet-flat sheet-doona
that way if the wet the bed just rip off the wet sheet and mattress protector and the bed is still made!! (as long as they dont wee on the doona like DD did )

wow Lorelle, how clever is Cendrine! I hear you totally on not wanting your only child to grow up, I think thats why I let Archie stay in nappies for so long and still have his dummy....

I am waiting for Arch to have dry nappies in the mornings then I'll leave the nappy off at night, though he sleps in our bed so I think it'll be quite a while before I trust him without a nappy on!

DD1 was day trained at 2.5 and then she told us she wanted to wear undies to bed at 3. As Olive said I would make the bed up double layered so that it was easy to change for accidents.

Initially she started on naps with undies and she was fine. When she said she wanted to go all night I told her she needed to be dry 5 nights in a row and she could wear undies (she was still flooding her night nappy at this stage so we didn't think she was ready). Well, when we said that, the next night was the start of 5 dry nights in a row! So she wore undies to bed and has ever since.

The main thing for us is to remember to make sure she goes to the toilet before bed as the times that she has wet the bed tend to be when we have forgotten to do that.

we make DD go to the toilet before bath and after getting dressed again, so twice in around 20 mins

Thanks heaps Nai & Olive ... yeh, we always pop her on the toilet before bed even if she tells us she doesn't need to go. Will DO Nai's tip for sure, what a brilliant idea

... and thanks Elissa for understanding, it's been a tug of war with my heart to some it might sound odd to say but for DD to be totally out of nappies at night-time now it means anything left of her baby years are now gone forever & it still breaks my heart i will never experience another baby ... but funny enough i was quick to get onto everything else early enough like the dummy, etc ... ' this ' night-time nappy thing was the last of everything before she was totally my little girl growing up so quickly
