I'm getting more and more concerned that my little Ryan may have whooping cough.
He's been unwell for most of the week (runny nose, sneezes, a couple of chucks, etc), and for the last few days he's got this cough that sounds most unpleasant Its not a 'normal' cough, I *think* it sounds 'whoopy' but I'm not sure I've heard a whooping cough to compare it with.
The local drs here have an after hours service where you just rock up and they see you, so I am waiting for the Man to come home and mind Steph so that I can just take boyo. Steph has a cough and a runny nose too, so should I take her too? Her cough sounds more normal, and she's not been herself lately either.
How can I be firm at the drs and tell them what I think? (That maybe he does have whooping cough?) Do kids with whooping cough need to go to hospital???
Hi mate. Have you made it to the drs yet?
Not sure if bubs with whooping cough necessarily always go straight to hospital, but if you're worried about his breathing then its probably a good idea. I'm sure they'd have more effective medication if it is WC.
Hope you are both doing ok and that you're getting some help.
How did you go at the Dr (I presume this post written after the fact)??? I usually say "Do you think it's XXX" to the Dr., straight out like that if I have a concern/suspicion. Whooping cough is usually a continuous cough and the child can sound quite breathless.
Got home a little while ago (spent ages at the chemist ). Took both kids, Steph was a PITA, but dr said both definitely have a viral infection, not necessarily something that requires antibiotics. I said that I thought it could be wc in Ryan.
He said to give them both dimetapp or demizin (sp) and gave me a script for both kids. Get to the chemist... Steph's dimetapp is over the counter, Ryan's.... isn't made anymore! Since some numbskull decided to OD their child in america and it then became script only, the manufacturer decided not to continue it anymore. And there is nothing else available to treat under two year olds! The chemist offered me a nasal spray for Ryan to clear up his sinuses! WHAT?!? Are you for real? Yeah, hang on, let me just untie my third hand from behind my back so that I can hold him still and spray something up his nose! Can you tell that I was displeased?
Oh, and Steph left her drink bottle in the waiting room (silly me! ) and there was LOTS of lightening as we were coming back from the chemist, so I got the Man to pick that up for me. (Yes, I am a bit of a wuss, but mainly didn't want to have to get the kids out of the car just for that)
Lastly, dr said if cough still persists after 3-4 more days with demizin, then to come back...
Is he vomitting after the coughing fits? Generally if it is WC they will have a hugh coughing fit then vomit immediately.
If it is croup, which sounds a lot like WC, they wont vomit.
With croup there is no real medecine for it, they just get over it themselves in a week of so.
No vomiting usually, but it sounds like he does swallow something pretty awful most of the time! Poor little guy. He's just not a very happy little camper, and the sudden hot weather is not helping.
