    Question 6 yr old's bladder...

Would you be concerned if you have noticed in the past approx 6-12 months an increase in the frequency at which your 6yr old goes to the toilet?

DD1 has always had extremely strong bladder and bowel control - as a toddler there was no such thing as an "Accident", she always managed to hold on. But in the past 6-12 months we have noticed that she is going to the toilet to do wees more often. Sometimes as often as 3-4 times in a couple of hours. She says that she doesnt have any stinging but she just needs to go alot. My mum thinks that she shouldnt be going as often as she does and that it is an issue.

What does everyone else think? Would you be concerned and get it checked up?

Our DD has issues with her bladder and kidneys and we regularly see an urologist. She recommends that DD empties her bladder every 2 hours. Now sometimes she does, but often she only does small wee's and doesn't empty it entirely. When that happens she has to urinate more frequently. My DD can't often relax enough to empty her bladder, so sometimes we talk to her about sitting down and taking a deep breath in order to help relax her muscles so she can urinate.

She has had 5 urinary tract infections in the past 6 months, and we found that she urinates more frequently then. She doesn't ever feel stinging with her infections, so maybe take her to the GP to get her wee checked just in case?

I would take her to get checked. It might be nothing, but it can be an indicator for some medical issues, so worth getting her checked out.

I agree with the girls. I'd get her checked just to be on the safe side. UTI's aren't always accompained with stinging.

Thanks ladies. WIll make an appt for her to see doc and will pre-empt it by taking a urine sample with us. I have never had urine infections (touch wood) so assumed that they were accompanied by a stinging sensation.

When my neice was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 4 it was because my MIL noticed she was drinking heaps and always going to the toilet and having accidents again..

so i would def. have it checked out and be happy when they say she is normal

Well I took DD to docters today along with a urine sample. They tested that and said there appeared to be no sign of infection and also did a blood sugar reading (boy did she scream the surgery down over a tiny *****!) and that came back fine too. So according to Doc we just need to try and get her to "hold it in" more and retrain her bladder.

Thanks ladies for all your words of advice. I feel much more reassured now.

Great news that it is nothing serious!! Good luck with the bladder retraining.
