Question *HELP PLEASE* Can anyone please refresh me on the signs of dehydration in a toddler

DD has a nasty virus, her throat is red raw and she isn't eating and we can only very occassionally get a sip of water into her. We want to make sure she doesn't get dehydrated as her temp has been 39+ for most of the last 24 hours, and that is using panadol, neurofen, cool baths, and a cold compress.

Any help would be hugely appreciated
    TIA xxoo

I guess the out put is the best indicator. How many wee's is she doing? I think if its less than 4 heavy nappies in 24 hours?
Have you tried ice? Or ice blocks. Try the 5 mls every 5 minutes with a dropper too if you can.
    Good luck hun x

Hey darl, scary isn't it. White or pale lips. REALLY bad lethargy or not really responding well. Not having wet nappies or really minimal ... you want at least one or two medium heavy nappies. If you are concerned get some pedialyte iceblocks, which will not only be good for her sore throat, but it will replace everything she's losing in dehydration kwim? Its best to keep up the fluids as much as possible whether it be through water or iceblocks such as the pedialyte other wise she will end up on a drip babe.

She has had 3 pretty dry nappies in the last 18 hours, we have tried, ice, icecream, yogurt, custard, milk, milo and she will take one sip of water it hurts to swallow so she bashes it away, but it is our best sucess, we can't even get the panadol and neurofen into her now, and we have tried using a syringe and the neurofen syringe thing too

I will run out and get some pedilyte, she is white as a ghost, and we really do not want to go to hospital, been there too many times already so we want to get through it at home if we can.

Hun, can you try suppositries (sp?) for the temp? We use them when DS has had the vomiting bug in the past and it's the only way we can get his temp down.

How about hydralite ice-blocks, sucking on one will help with hydration but also help sooth her throat.

Maybe a straw? Or a big girl cup without the lid on. Cordial, juice, lemonade? Anything.

I know how hard that is though. DD2 had tonsillitis & I couldn't get anything into her. Her temp wouldn't go under 39 either & she just slept all day. She was so swollen in the throat.
If you don't go to the hossy tonight, I'd be heading straight to the GP in the morning for some abs. If her throat is that bad, she might need them.
We headed to hossy & DD was in for 5 days with NGT..

The pedialyte or hydrolyte iceblocks are probably your best bet at this stage cause you really need to start getting some fluids into her babe. And like I said it will really cool her throat down and also replace the vitamins etc she's lost. And for some reason.. they love the taste?!!? Gosh knows why it's HORRIBLE lol

jelly? mostly water but feels good down sore throats?

A simple test is also to pinch loose skin (hard to find on a toddler though!) and if dehydrated it will stay "pinched" - good hydration will settle down quickly....

the skin will become dry. lips will be dry and may appear cracked or flakey. their mouth may be very dry. and of course, decreased output.

If she is refusing fluids, you can try to squirt 10ml into her cheek with a syringe every 15 minutes. This will help. Doing it with something like peadalyte is great.

The suppository panadol is brilliant. Will help her if she is in pain - it is a very effective way of administering it.

    HTH and hang in there!

    Thankyou all for your suggestions

I got the message about the supporistries after I got home and the chemist is now shut I did get the hydrolyte, but when I got home DD had fallen asleep, which she really needs as she has only had a douple of dozes today.

We keep trying to squirt stuff in her mouth but she is spitting it out and swatting it away hopefully she wakes up at a reasonable hour this evening and can try the hydrolyte, but I don't want to wake her up when she really needs the sleep.

We will keep a close on on those signs thanks heaps MG

I hope so, just some fluids would be good, the hyrdolyte is ready but she crashed after the bath and I don't want to wake her as she has had so little sleep.... When ever she stirs we go up to give her water, but still refusing I am sure she will pick up soon.

Hopefully we can get some more into her overnight

Be prepared for a night of no sleep & keep trying to get a drop in at a time maybe.
You might be unsuccessful like I was, but if its only a drop it might not be noticed as much. Specially if its water, I was trying to get abs into DD2.

Beema, how is your little one going this morning? I have to be honest, it already sounds like she is pretty dehydrated now. If she doesn't improve by today, I would strongly suggest taking her to be seen and assessed as to whether she needs to have some IV fluids or an NG tube for rehydration.

Yeah i'd have to agree with Schmickers. Unless you've gotten some fluids into her, i'd take her to the hospital. Dehydration isn't something to mess around with, it can be really scary. IF she's not taking stuff oraly she will need a drip and they will put a bag on her (not a catheder.. it just sticks onto her girly bits) to monitor her wee and probably test it too. Hopefully she is MUCH better this morning though!

Thankyou for your messages, a bit of an update overnight.

She had a little bit of water overnight, since 4pm yesterday (we have used the same water bottle to get an idea on how much) we have gotten about 80ml, enough to keep her mouth wet, so just one sip at a time. We tried the hydrolyte blocks and she wouldn't give them a shot, we are defrosting one and putting it in one of her water bottles to see if she will drink some by accident. She had about a teaspoon of oats and yogurt, which she then gagged on and we got to see again  DH event ried a twistie and got excited and sent me a message to say she had eaten, some, but unfortunately by the time I replied that too had returned, so we aren't going to bother with the food.

Her nappy was damp this morning so we know that something is getting through, even if it was 14 hours.. and usually she would have exploded out of the dippy with the amound she usually pees

Would be nice to be able to get meds into her, but can't even get near her with a syringe of any sort, and we are looking at going down the suppositry path...

Hopefully she gets a bit more fluid into her during the day, any suggestions on how much we should aim for, the hyralyte says for her age 1 evey 60min, which is 62.5ml, if we can't get that much into her of either the water or hydralyte should we take her in?

She is very pale and lethargic, but she has managed a few smiles.

    TIA
