    Position of placenta?

    Hey guys,

I had a 32 week growth scan yesterday to check bubby is growing as normal - all good there so far.

The one thing that made me wonder though - at my 19 week scan I had a posterior placenta. Yesterday the sonographer said I have an anterior one.

    Can the placenta move around?
Is that a dumb question? I thought that it was fairly fixed in the one spot?????

    Thanks in advance,
    Sue xx

    Hi Sue1979

No, its not a dumb question It's not that the placenta moves as, yes it is attached firmly to the wall of the uterus, its more like when the uterus stretches, some areas stretch more than others and the placenta and the uterine wall move around. Think of it as a balloon expanding but some spots more so than others.

Either that or your sonographer isnt very good LOL

No, your placenta doesn't move from being posteriorly positioned to being anterior... So, I'm not sure what's happening there?

Posterior placentas are more common though. Did you read this on the report or did he/she verbally tell you? Perhaps he/she made an error in translation?

Placentas of course grow with the baby - but their attatchment is either posterior or anterior - though some are less so either way IYKWIM?

For example anterior placentas are more likely of course to grow closer to the os - simply as they are closer of course being anterior. But as many know a placenta that seems close to the os in a 20 week morphology u/s can & very likely will grow away from the os...

I can't explain why this is the case for you. But I will be really interested to know when you find out!
