Question Was it the eggplant or the sea salt?

Day by day we are learning what foods my lil man has allergys too.

Tonight we are having spag bog and i was about to put the eggplant in in when hubby said no, he doesnt like them, so i sliced it up, put sea salt on it and grilled it on the george. yummmy

The kids all wanted to snack on some while they wait for dinner, as soon as my son ate some, i noticed in less than 5 min, he was going red around the mouth, i thought maybe the sea salt was stinging his lips, (i did over salt it), he kept eating as i was still doing dinner, then after he was donw i noticed his entire tummy was just red, showing symptoms of the usual rash he gets when he has an allergy.

So im not sure if it was the huge amount of sea salt or the egg plant, hubby says the egg plant as he has had salt on hot chips before.

It was the long thin one not the short fat one.
and i cant remember if he had egg plant at my mums before?

I'm going to go with eggplant, I've never heard of sea salt causing an allergic reaction.

ETA: Well I googled and hey, did you know sea salt can have some 'marine' residuals, which can cause a reaction if someone is allergic to shellfish. I didn't! So I think it'd be worth looking into it more, maybe mention it to your dr if you are seeing one about the allergies. Has he ever had eggplant before? If he hasn't had eggplant and he has had sea salt with no reaction, I'd still be going eggplant, although if it was over-salted... Hmmm, dunno. I'm no help

Egg plant. We always grew egg plant and it was one of my kids first foods cause it was fresh and readily available.. They always went red around the mouth but that was the only problem, they loved it! That sounds really bad, but like you I was unaware to begin with until I fed it to them a few times and realized it wasn't normal.

oh wow leasha didnt realise that about the sea salt, and i really did over do it, i put the thin slices on the george and just used the batterery operated salt dispencer and i did both sides. Havent yet found out if he is allergic to shel fish, but the way he is going it wouldnt suprise me, i think the only salt he has had is normal table salt.

hmm interesting tanya, if ur kids had the rash around the mouth then maybe it was the eggplant, he really loved it, but with the rash going down to his tummy, im affraid that he wont be getting it anymore lol

hubby gave him a cool shower and the rash has gotten lighter.

man his allergy list is getting longer!

and im very wary of the sea salt, i suppose the only way i will find out is to give it to him again.

edt- hubby says he thinks he might be allergic to both the sea salt and the eggplant!

Charlotte has a topical reaction to eggplant - it is her only allergy.

Check out some info on Nightshade vegetables they are known to cause common allergies and see how he goes with the others

I know how you feel darl. We don't have any food allergies, but Jazzy and I have numerous additive/preservative intolerances and we're always thinking we're safe and then BAM theres another number we have to eliminate. Not quite as bad though I know, and I really feel for you.

Thanks limeslice, i just googled then, and yea there it was a section about allergies. geez, he is two next month and has just started a nice list of allergies.

    Allergies
Case reports of itchy skin and/or mouth after handling and/or eating eggplant have been reported anecdotally and published in medical journals (see also oral allergy syndrome). A recent (2008) study of a sample of 741 people in India (where eggplant is commonly consumed) found that nearly 10% reported some allergic symptoms after consuming eggplant, while 1.4% showed symptoms in less than 2 hours.[10] Contact dermatitis from eggplant leaves[11] and allergy to eggplant flower pollen[12] have also been reported. Individuals who are atopic (genetically predisposed to hypersensitivity, such as hayfever) are more likely to have a reaction to eggplant, which may be due to the fact that eggplant is high in histamines. A few proteins and at least one secondary metabolite have been identified as potential allergens.[13] Cooking eggplant thoroughly seems to preclude reactions in some individuals, but at least one of the allergenic proteins survives the cooking process.
Well he has just been diagnoised with asthma, so the part about the hypersensitivity makes sence.

Leasha, i know how u feel, my oldest son cant have preservatives, but we find it so hard that most days he ends up eating them.

hmm, just noticed that its just my boys with these issues, lol

thanks tanya, everything he is allergic to now, i will be trying again, when he is older.

I just found this on the same site.

Eggplant is richer in nicotine than any other edible plant, with a concentration of 100 ng/g (or 0.01 mg/100g). However, the amount of nicotine from eggplant or any other food is negligible compared to passive smoking.[9] On average, 20 lbs (9 kg) of eggplant contains about the same amount of nicotine as a cigarette.
