Its not mandatory to have them fitted or checked professionally.
I did get mine done with my first baby though, as I wasnt sure.
Once you have them do it the first time you can see how its easy enough to do youself, particularly if you are putting it in the centre position - they're much easier to put in there (assuming its a lap belt)
I know here in SA, the RAA, Australian Red Cross and Baby bunting have professional fitters available - and it only costs around $20-$30. So first time around, I'd get it fitted by a professional whilst you and DH watch, that way you know its in correctly, plus you can see how to do it in future. I think something like 80% of car seats are incorrectly installed, so its better to be safe than sorry I suppose.
i had a friend do our capsule as i'd never fitted one - it was easy enough looking at the instructions, but i wanted to be sure. i took it out last week and realised i could have done it - but given it was a car i'd never had a seat in, i wanted to be sure in case the angle of the seat was wrong
i have put the follow on seat in though - have done that heaps with carseats for my bro's kids - so i didn't feel the need for that one
For all the money we spend on car seats to keep our kids safe, it's only $20 - $30 to get them fitted professionally.
Ten minutes of your time, and a professionally fitted car seat doesn't move AT ALL on the seat. We have never been able to get the seats that secure on our own. Ring the RACV or state equivalent to find out where they are done.
Just our own two cents worth.....
yeah thats what i was thinking Sally- i want it to be safe and even though it seems easy enough to fit i wont feel at ease un less i know it is 100% safe and secure - these things can save a baby's life in an accident
u hear about it a lot where there will be an accident and ppl ion the car will be badly hurt or worse yet the baby or child is safe in there seat
