Basically, I did it to get my pillow back. DS1 decided that my pillow was very comfortable and I was trying to get some of my pillow at awful hours of the morning. That was when I got a very thin one for him. I think he was about 13 months old.
About 14 months when she went into a big bed (new baby was coming so we needed the cot). We bought a Tontine kid's pillow and she loved it. Risk of SIDS greatly decreases after 12 months. Some people find that their child sleeps much better once they introduce a pillow too. TBH I didn't notice much difference but she definitely didn't sleep any worse!
DS moved into his big bed at 27 months and we just used an adult pillow as I forgot to get a kid's one. He doesn't use it very much as he moves about the bed a lot.
My kids slept between pillows for a long time. I did it that way as that's how it was in our bed.. they'd be between our pillows. DS still, the majority of the time, doesn't want a pillow. DD is just recently asking for a pillow.. but she doesn't stay on it all night.. she eithers moves off it or it ends up on the floor.
