DS was in his cot until 26 months. He'd probably still be in it if we hadn't needed it for DD. We never had any problems with him climbing out so probably why we kept him in there for so long. I think the timing was right for us as he was ready and coped very easily when we made the move.
The transition was so easy. We got a Thomas the Tank quilt set which he just loves and made a big deal of sleeping in the Thomas bed. The first day sleep he was too excited and was up and down a lot but eventually settled. For the night sleeo we gave him the option of sleeping in the cot which we kept in the room JIC but he wanted to sleep in the bed. We've had a few issues with him falling out of bed even with the safety rail up, but in all its been a very easy transition. We rarely have any problems with him getting up before us to explore or play. Mostly when he hears our alarm go off that is his cue to get up too!
DD went into a bed at 16months old. The transistion itself was easy because it was her wanting to be out of the cot, not me wanting her to be out of it.
It took me a week of rubbish and screaming at sleep time to realise she didn't want to sleep in the cot any longer. Once in a bed she was fine.
She is also an amazon child and at that age was nearly too long to be comfortable in it anyhow....
Our DS1 was ready to move to a big bed at 21 months, possibly earlier. He was banging his head on the sides and getting his legs caught between the slats, so we were getting up at night to free him. At this stage he wasn't climbing out of the cot on his own, but he can now. We had number 2 on the way and the books said to move him early so he wouldn't associate the move with the new baby. DH bought him a car bed because he said the sides would stop DS from rolling out of bed. I think it was because he didn't have one as a kid It took us a couple of months to find the right bed, else we would have moved him sooner. DS took to his new bed (and new room, we left the cot in the old room) straight away and started sleeping through the night again. He loved it so much he would put himself to bed. The novelty does wear off. Now he's 28 months old and and we're having issues getting him to go to bed, but that's another story.
We moved DS at 18 months. We found this really cool second hand loft bed with a slide and we had nowhere to store it so just set it up. He was so excited to sleep in a big bed that the transition went smoothly. He got out a few times but we just kept putting him back and he's been really good ever since.
DD moved into a big bed at 17 months because we moved house and she's quite tall and had just about outgrown the cot. The first few nights she was unsettled but that could have been a combination of moving house and changing into a new bed. After that she started sleeping right through and has done so basically every night since (she's now almost 2 years old).
She started out with the matress on the floor and then at 21 months we moved the matress onto the frame with a side rail. Last week we took the side rail off altogether because she doesn't move much when she sleeps.
We moved DD1 into a toddler bed at 14 months because we had number 2 on the way. We needed the cot for DD2. It wasn't as big an ordeal as I thought it would be although we did put a gate across her doorway, mainly for peace of mind for me in case she got out in the middle of the night and I didn't wake up. We set it up for a week or so before we put her in it to sleep just so she could get used to the idea which I think worked :-)
roughly 15-16months old. We needed the cot as the baby was outgrowing the bassinette and trying to roll. She went straight into a big bottom bunk bed. The only issue we have is her waking thru the night and sleeping on the floor usually behind the door... as if she is bored/wanting to escape the room she shares or gets up and plays and crashes on the floor. If we tell her its night night time, she walks off to her room and climbs up onto her bed, so cute! She is very smart!
DS1 went into a bed at 23 months of age. He was uncertain the first time I put him in it, but I lay down next to him for about 20 minutes. I was going to lay next to him until he fell asleep, but the phone rang so I had to go answer it LOL! By the time I got off the phone and went back into his room he was asleep and we had no issues from then on .
DS2 just went into a bed a week ago (he's 28 months old). We bought our boys bunk beds and he was so excited about it that again we had no issues with the transition .
So both boys were just the right age to move into a bed. I think you just kind of know when they are ready.
About four days ago....she is 18 months. Its been pretty smooth so far, but then she doesnt self settle, i put her to sleep then pop her in bed. I think she likes it beter casue she has more room to move around, she always ended up crammed in a corner in the cot and woke up because she was stuck.
My DP thought she was ready so i just went with that, she loves it and always tells every one about her big girl bed!!! GL
I moved all of ours out of a cot when they could climb off something eg the couch, then I knew they could get off a bed. DS1 was 11mo, DD was 9mo (slightly diff, her cot broke in a move so she was on a matteress on the ground for a couple months ) and DS2 was 12 months.
I found they slept better, I guess they liked having more room
DS refused to ever sleep in his cot, he would only sleep in the poortacot and by 19 months he had outgrown his portacot, so we bought him a bed. We had a hell of a time trying to keep him in bed for ages!
With the next bub I plan on leaving him/her in the cot til he/she cannot possibly fit in there anymore, hopefully that will be 3 years old.
