I have been sick since Saturday - REALLY sick. High fever, for the first few days I was on four hourly panadol to keep the fever down and it was losing. After the first few days the fever backed off a bit, but had oral thrush or some kind of really painful mouth infection so could hardly eat... all in all a pretty miserable week. Tuesday DD was sent home from Day Care with a fever, and since then she has been having temp spikes up to 39+ degrees. We took her to the docs and they said it's viral, there is nothing we can do but keep her comfortable and manage the fever with nurofen and lukewarm baths. So now it's friday and we have been doing that ever since. I asked the pharmacist again yesterday and she also said that it's all I can do. But really - it's been four days. How long am I supposed to go on doing this before I take her back to the doctors? Or are they just going to tell me to keep doing what I'm doing
Given it's almost 5 o'clock on a Friday, you probably can't get back to the doc anyhow!
I would make an appointment for Monday and if her fever is still persisting then and hasn't gotten markedly worse, I would take her back to the Docs and insist on something else to be done. Good luck and I hope she turn the corner soon.
hun I'd probably take her to Warriewood medical centre (which is now in Mona Vale incase you didnt know ) either tonight if she gets bad or tomorrow if she doesn't seem to be getting better. Not entirely sure what time they close. I know W'Mall medical centre is open til 10pm.
Dont you hate it when they're sick & all you can do is give them panadol, keep their fluids up etc etc but nothing helps
Good luck, I hope she's feeling better really soon (& you too!!) xoxo
Four days down the track, I would take her to the doctor to be reassessed, but with the knowledge that yes, they probably will tell you it's viral (because it probably is) and they probably won't be able to do anything else (because there isn't really anything else you can do).
I know, I know, it's terrible watching them suffer. But remember, the fevers won't hurt them. Oh, and panadol every four hours? Make sure you don't give it more often than four times a day, or it can damage their liver.
Thanks all, I will take her back to the MC this morning because we had a shocking night and I'm pretty sure she has this problem with her mouth now that I have. Fever seems a bit better at least.
And Schmickers the panadol every four hours was for me last weekend. I finally got to the chemist and got myself some nurofen. I usually use nurofen rather than panadol for her, she doesn't spit it all over me and it lasts a lot longer.
Nurofen's fine. My girls seem to respond a bit better to it as well. But unfortunately I know of more than one parent who has read the "up to every four hours" bit on the side of paracetamol bottle and don't read the "up to four times a day" bit...
