    Question Swelling In One Foot?

As the title suggests ive started swelling in my right foot? I started noticing it about a week ago and its not every day but when it happens it feels like my foot is going to explode!! Im drinking lots of water, not on my feet a lot during the day (desk job).

Can anyone suggest a way of stopping this? Is it normal for one foot to swell?

    Hi Ammaki

Does it go down in the morning? If not get checked out ASAP.

Make sure you are getting your BP and urine checked.

Googled and found this on a reputable website... "Also call your caregiver if you notice that one leg is significantly more swollen than the other, especially if you have any pain or tenderness in your calf or thigh."

I have one foot more swollen than the other and my Dr and MW told me that unless it was accompanied by pain then it is just fluid retention.

It does look weird though - one fat foot and one skinny foot!!

I'm prone to DVT's though so it has been closely monitored by my caregivers. But I'm not worried as it isn't sore.

    Ah the joys of pregnancy!!

I also swelled just in one foot during my first pregnancy. My doctor wasn't really concerned but recommended compression stockings once the swelling appeared. I felt very disconcerted though!!

No swelling yet in this pregnancy, but don't even get me started on my varicose veins!!

I think it might be best to get it checked out, just to be reassured that it's nothing.

Yep, my left foot swells worse than my right. I've had my wee checked, and my GP says that unless it hurts (my leg, not my wee) or my whole leg becomes swollen then it's just fluid retention. My GP also said that it might be worse in one leg simply because of a lymphatic thing - which was nothing to be concerned about. It's interesting though, because whenever my sciatica plays up, it's my left leg that suffers.

Always best to get it checked, but I say it's probably nothing to worry about.

Are you crossing your legs/ankle or sitting on your foot? This is a common cause of 1 foot swelling

I had this with DD2 and was told by my OB that the uterus doesn't sit evenly weighted so it often puts more pressure on one side than the other and hence you get more swelling on the side with more pressure.

Thanks for all of your replies!!

Ali it mostly goes down in the morning! Depending how bad it was i can still feel the difference some mornings.

Alan i sit on my left foot a lot, and its my right foot swelling? Would that be the cause! I thought of that and have tried to stop the habit!

My chiro told me this morning to up my water intake as well

Theres no pain, just uncomfortable! Sometimes tingling?

If it continues or gets worse ill go to my doc! Funny thing is my last appointment was only a week ago and he checked for swelling then but it only started occuring the day after my appointment!

    Thanks again!! x

    Hi Ammaki
Usually the foot you sit on is the one that swells. However if when sitting on your left foot you have it under your right thigh then this could reduce the blood return on your right leg and cause the swelling in your right foot.......Phew I hope that makes sense.

I had this with my last 2 kids. I even had it for 6 weeks post natal after having Anelise. I figured out that mine was caused by how I sat, I always had one foot elevated and the other dangling over the side of the bed, couch whatever... the one that dangled is the one that got the swelling. I got Hirudoid cream from the chemist and it went away in no time.
