    NT measurements

Does anyone know what the categories are for NT measurements? At what measurement does HIGH risk begin? (blood tests results aside)

it depends on the time (what week gestation) that the scan is done. i will find the chart and come back.

Thanks Kate. I had mine yesterday and was 13 weeks Monday just gone. My results came back 2.32mm although she had trouble getting a good view as babeee was moving all over the place. She also got another measurement as low as 1.62mm and a few in between. She said that result alone puts in my at high risk but just waiting on bt results which i should get today.

over about 2.5mm is not a good sign. after about 12-13 weeks the measurement starts to get smaller so that is why you have to have it done then (if you choose to get it done at all) but you do have to put them with the blood test results and other markers for an overall risk figure. did you have your nuchal thickness measured already? hth x

sorry i just read you got between 1.62 and 2.32, that does seem ok, but still needs to be put with the rest of your tests for an overall risk figure. and although your sonographer was trying to be helpful with the one in ten comment, i don't think that nuchal would be any where near a one in ten risk on it's own.

FWIW - DD's NT measurement was between 6 and 7mm and she is now a perfectly happy, normal, healthy one year old.

My next bubba's measurement was around 2mm I think and the sonographer was much much happier with that. Obviously me and DH produce babes with thick necks!

Try not to stress too much about it until you get all the results back (incl. the BT, did you have that?).

I wouldn't say thats a thick fold. I have seen them up around 5mm and 6mm which have been the bubs affected by an abnormality. I thought anything over about 3mm was getting up in the high risk group but as Kate07 said it depends on gestation. Plus the risk is going to be given along with the BT and if you don't have both then its not going to be accurate.

I personally haven't seen any over 6 or the low 6mms but not all of bubs have had a problem with an abnormality (like my previous post probably sounded like) which have been that high. Its important to remember its not a diagnostic tool but a tool to give you a risk of having a bub affected by several abnormalities. Even with results as high as 1:2 then there is still a 50% chance bub is healthy and not affected by various abnormalities.

I have had blodds done and am waiting for her to call me with the results....am s-l-o-w-l-y- going insane waiting. I keep telling myself that she did try for almost 30 mins to get a good reading as bubs kept moving around so much. She said she just took the highest reading as a rule of thumb.

I have no idea what prev pregnancies were....never was a problem I guess.

She also said the 9/10 babies are fine and go on to be healthy babies.

I think i am just thinking the worst but i was dreading something like this leading up to the scan...esp since it was my first one with my DH with me. Have tried to express how I am feeling atm but he does not get it as he was not there. Just keeps telling me the 9/10 stat she told me blah blah blah.

So far, I have cried my heart and soul out, yelled all day at my two goreous boys and slept. I think I got about 3 hrs sleep last night.

Just wish the waiting was OVER! Ment to be going away for a week tomorrow - really feel like staying in bed for the week at this stage. I felt babeee kicking and playing earlier and instead of enjoying the moment like I always have, I kinda could feel myself distancing myself from Babeee already - I don't 'do' waiting very good!

Its probably a bit premature but I would probably put a complaint in about the sonographer. Even if your at a higher risk it might be 1:200 or 1:100 or something the stats the sonographer gave you is 1:10 which is probably bull S and contributed to unneccessary anxiety. As far as I am concerned it wasn't his/her area to say that to you. Obviously now you need to wait for the BT and hopefully that reassures you that bub is ok. Even if the correct NT was 2.32mm that alone would not give you a risk of 1 in 10 on its own without the BT.

Thats not real high...I am pretty sure its over 3mm. FWIW...dd1 had a 6.3mm measurement and the combined bt gave me a 1:19 of ds and 1:32 of T18. Shes a happy and healthy 3 year old.....(its her bday today)

I just looked on a medical site I have assess to from my work and it said anything below 2mm is normal at 11weeks. At 13-14weeks anything under 2.8mm is within the normal range.

    Thanks Rowellen.

Mildez - Anxiety with a capital A! I am beginning to think NT scans are a waste of time - precious time that could be better spent doing other things like enjoying being pregnant. I think if I have not heard from her by 5pm-ish, I might calll my wonderful OBGYN and speak with her. Thanks for explaining things to me. I do feel a little better.

Sorry it has taken so long to get back, but the other girls have given you good info.

The NT measurement by itself is not usually used to determine risk, because by itself it has a high false positive rate (compared to the combo of NT scan + bloods)

In saying that, below 2.5mm (or even 3mm towards 13 weeks gestation) does not usually increase the risk figure. So, your measurements were fine.

I think the sonographer was wrong in giving you some info without explaining properly, or you having someone to get the info from. Especially as you are also waiting on bloods.

When was your blood taken? Results can sometimes take more than a week to get back. It is better if you have a proactive dr who will follow up with the lab.

Please try not to worry, an accurate risk figure is based on age, blood plus NT measurement. And it is only a risk figure, even if the combo comes back with a higher risk, this is not definitive.

So glad you have a good 'high risk' rating
