    Sinusitis

Can anyone shed some light on a way to get relief?

I am 12 weeks 2 days, and since around 10 weeks I've been struggling daily with headaches, pain in my face and stuffiness. I've tried almost everything. Panadol, and Panadeine have done little for me.

I've tried vicks vaporub, and vicks vaposteam in a bucket of hot water. I've got saline spray (which does nothing) and I've tried hot compresses, and hot showers.

I've seen my GP, ended up in emergency for an afternoon last weekend with a massive migraine and gone to another GP (because mine is expensive and with all my time off work I'm short of money).

I'm at my wits end. Had to go home sick good friday and took yesterday off too. On the outside it probably looks like i'm faking it, but i can tell you i wouldn't miss out on public holiday pay if i wasn't feeling like this, i feel awful.

I am exhausted and I am miserable. I am all out of sick leave and worried about my job security.

What more can I do? The GP prescribed me amoxicillin, but i'm allergic to penicillin, so i'm too scared to try it in case i do react.

I was exactly the same in my first pregnancy. I found cold compresses gave me some relief.. I was often found sleeping with a cold washer draped over my eyes and nose. Panadol did nothing for me either.

If you do suspect an infection.. ask your GP for antibiotics that aren't penicillin. Or ask at the pharmacy if there is one that is safe in pg that isn't penicillin.

Mine wasn't infected tho.. it was just painful.

Maybe have a chat to the pharmacist about hayfever sprays and you can weigh up the risks of using those.

FWIW I think my headaches eased up around week 15 or so? I can't really remember.. but they definitely eased up and eventually disappeared. *big hugs* I really know how you feel.

    Thanks Liz.

I am pretty sure there aren't any other antibiotics to take in pregnancy. Doxycicline was one option, but it clearly states that its harmful to babies, although it claims to be safe for babies in the first 18 weeks, i'm a bit skeptical.

Hopefully it will clear up on its own soon Its good to know that it might possibly go away. I can't deal with this for another 6 months.

    Hi Brydz

I'm 9 weeks and also really stuffy. Thankfully I'm not getting impacted sinuses, I have a post-nasal drip (sorry, gross eh?) so its causing throat infections and a cough.

I wish I had answers, but I can only offer sympathy. And, I guess to suggest that you keep drinking tons of water to keep the mucus as fluid as possible. (Not that you need any more reasons to be going to the bathroom I bet!)

My doc said that a cortisone nasal spray is perfectly safe. It wouldnt work straight away but might provide some relief long term?? Personally though I am not using that at the moment cos I want to keep off all medication as long as I can. You're past the teratogenic phase now though so maybe worth a try?

I can sometimes tell if I have an infection (vs congestion) by the colour and (sorry) taste of the the mucus. Not sure if you can tell?? I wouldnt risk the amoxycillin if you can avoid it, but it you do need to, maybe you could test your immune reaction first? you could start by putting a little on your skin first (make a paste if its tablets). If you dont react on your skin after 12-24hrs then try making a little scratch in your skin and putting it in the scratch, if thats ok try taking half a tablet... etc.

I'm thinking of getting one of those steam vaporisers with the mask. No idea how much they'll be though??

I hope it settles down for you really soon.

I had terrible sinusitis when pregnant with DD, I was crying from the pain of it. I had a sinus infection in the end.

There ARE other antibiotics you can have - I am allergic to penicillin too. I just can't remember what the name of it was now. The GP looked up on her computer something I could have that was safe in pregnancy and not penicillin. I feel like it began with Z but I just can't recall, it was 2 years ago now.

I also had a saline nasal wash called Sinoclear from the chemist and was taking Panadeine 4 times a day for a week until I could drop back to Panadol. The Sinoclear is a bit horrible, you tip your head to the side and squirt it up your nose, you have a momentary drowning type of feeling but it does work.

She also told me to use a nasal spray for relief but not to tell the pharmacist I was pregnant because they may not sell it to me - but that it WAS safe during pregnancy. I shouldn't go bananas with it...but then you shouldn't do that anyway.

Why a GP prescribed something you are allergic to is beyond me...go and see another one.
