I need a stick blender (we have been using an old smoothie maker but to be honest is rubbish and as is getting colder will be doing more soups etc) - I have $150 on gift cards for David Jones should I get a Bamix?
I know nothing about stick blenders at all - do I need to buy a special bowl to blend stuff in? I want a stick blender because we have no bench top room for anything else.
Wysiwyg - I've got a Breville Whizz Stick Pro or something it is called - probably half the price of a Bamix brand one and just as good
Get one of them - it came with two blades (a chopping one and a blending sort of one) but TBH I only use the chopping one, it also maybe came with a bowl? I can't recall, but I've got a great Tupperware bowl that I use instead which has a spatter guard.
I used it tonnes when I was starting DD on solids, I'd stick a whole bowlful of veges in the micro, get out the Whizz Stick and mushy food in no time
I'd say you don't need a special bowl unless you intend on doing things like chopping herbs or nuts? I think my mum has a special Bamix bowl thing to do that... but I wouldn't need it.
i reckon that if you have the gift card to go the bamix! we had a different brand it was AOK but it wasnt quite as good in the scope of being able to deal with loads of different food types.
in the end we got a bamix (also from a gift card lol) and havent looked back. ours comes with a container to do all the mixing in. the bamix thingy clips into the lid so there is no splash. we did all of DDs puree and use it for soups and also make banana smoothies with it.
they are a good little investment and it has been going strong for ages.
i guess it really depends on how much you'll be using it as to whether it's worth paying out for a bamix or another type of stick blender. we got a cheap stick blender when we got married - the only thing i don't like about it is that you have to hold the button in while you blend - apart from that, i don't find it all that much different to mum's exxy bamix. i have used ours a lot on soups and things, with no drama at all. i know mum has had her bamix a lot longer, but doesn't use it anywhere near as much as us
i've never used a special bowl with it though - if we are making a soup, we use it in the pot rather than taking it out into another bowl (i hate doing the extra dishes!). if whipping a small amount of cream, we just use a tupperware bowl (larger amounts we use the egg beaters cos it moves it round more and whips it better).
it really is personal choice though - is there something else you're thinking of getting if you DON'T go the bamix branded product? do the gift cards have an expiration date? if there is something else you need/want and you won't use it excessively, then use your cards to get a cheaper stick blender and the other item - if you don't see there being anything else you'll use your voucher on, and you'll end up buying "stuff" just to use it up, then go the Bamix!
