well DS is 11 months and he has no idea how to use a spoon does anyone know how i can teach him oh and he tips bowls over as soon as they go on the high chair
we do BLS too and i think thats why hes having such issues coz he doesnt have to use them but i really want to start giving him more foods but without the spoon hes not going to get hardly any of it in his mouth
We're still only just starting out really, but when I offer foods on a spoon I hold the end and let DD grab it and pull it to her mouth often. I also give it to her to practice after which she seems to quite enjoy.
DS1 doesn't do well either he sees a spoon more as something to hit food with and make a mess with. He prefers his fingers, so if something is not easily eaten with fingers I spoon feed him a bit then encourage him to do it himself but generally makes a big mess and gets frustrated.
Miss B is not the best with her spoon either! and drives me nuts! she tends to just "dunk" her spoon into whatever it is she is eating! and than when she does "scoop" we are trying to teach her to "scoop" she tips it upside down before it gets in her mouth! she is good with a fork! im thinking of trying those knife, spoon and fork set with the grooves in them - hopefully that will help!
My DS is not great either, but with DD we started giving her a dessert spoon or a melamine spoon that had a bigger head (some of the character set have them), so that there was a bigger surface area for her to scoop with.
She also had some huge plastic spoons to play outside/in the sand/in some rice in the bath etc to help develop the whole scooping skill.
If you can get some spoons with shorter, curved handles, or even the old style ones with a loop-shaped handle, it is much easier for them to hold.
Also we always ran a 2-spoon system - mummy/daddy holds one and then it doesn't really matter what happens with the other one, it all leads to better fine motor control which eventually means they can do it themselves.
We use to do the 2 spoon system to, one for DS1 one for mummy/daddy. Though we don't need to much these days (unless we're in a hurry).
My DS1 is 22.5months now, and even though we did some BLS, we've also always done mashed foods too (cause thats how we tend to our vegies for us anyway, and we have weetbix for breakie and yoghurt for lunch). It would've been about 5-6 months ago that DS1 started to work out his spoon, which was messy. And just 2-3months ago that it has improved to hardly any mess (i use to always use a plastic drop bib cause of the mess, but now he'd only have 1 or 2 misses if that, so rarely use the bib now).
DS1 has had to do a little bit of growing up fast over the last 2.5months because of our newborn plus he goes to childcare twice a week, so i think that's helped alot, as he has to feed himself there a bit.
So over i think its just practise. Just like most things...they'll learn when they're ready- one day it seems to just click.
My DS didnt use a spoon at all until he stared in CC. He would have a right woyal go of it but never successfully. Everything - including yoghurt was eaten with his hands. He still now prefers his hands for faster easting but he is persisting with the spoon. So he was 2yrs 1mth when he got the hang of it.
DD won't eat off a spoon at all - everything has to be off fingers. I give her one to play with but she isn't interested in it at all - makes eating out more messy but apart from that am ok with it.
