    Question Good pregnancy books?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can recommend some good books for a first pregnancy?

Books on Birthing that i found good

Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth
Spiritual Midwifery by Ina May Gaskin (an old book)
    Active Birth by Janet Balaskas
The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth by Henci Goer
    Birth Skills by Juju Sundin

What to Expect when you are Expecting- I found good as a reference for the different weeks of pregnancy- BUT it was fairly medical and i didn't agree with everything in it.

    Natural Way to Better Pregnancy and Natural Way to Better Birth and Bonding by F Naish;
Up The Duff - I don't recommend, personally, other than as an ocasional reference. But my sister enjoyed it when she was pregnant with her first.
Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering - another fan here too.

Personally the best info I've had about pregnancy is from BellyBelly - because no one tries to influence my decisions, and all info and advice is given without judgment or prejudice. Oh, and it's real and up-to-date because it's from women experiencing it now. Some of the books I have will still be in mint condition by the time I've given birth, but my BB membership will have paid it's way in dividends.

Maybe go into borders and have a little read of the ones you like and see which you are more into. Rather then bye them before reading a part of them.

    Good luck!

    I found prego mags good!

Labour of Love - Gaby Targett - it's not so much about pregnancy but about birthing - written in a no muss no fuss, natural kind of way

Thanks so much for all your recommendations, ladies! I've written them down and after my second BT (I need confirmation that all is well and my hcg levels are rising) I'll be off to Borders to have a good look around

Gentle birth, gentle mothering- Dr Sarah Buckley - YES! i agree with this one. even though this is my second bub its been wonderful.
Up the Duff is also good - helps with the men folk being able to point and go "look how big baby is this week" as well as a good chuckle.
    GL with the blood test!

Check out your local library first - they will have many of these titles also. Are you planning to join the ABA? I know it seems a bit early now, but your local group will have a library you can borrow from with lots of good pregnancy/birth and parenting books.

For pregnancy, I've found bb my best source of info. I think because everyone's experience is so different that no book is really going to cover it all. I read up the duff and found it amusing, but completely unhelpful.

For birth i found the materials I got for my Birthskills hypnobirthing course a really excellent source of info.

Hope the blood test is all good

I've got the Aussie version of What to Expect When Your Expecting - not really impressed with it, can't really explain why, probably cause it seems to be very scientific and medically presented if that makes sense.

I'm also looking around for some good reading. I've read some reviews about Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy (or something like that) its supposed to be quite good.

Think I'm also going to subscribe to a mag - any recommendations?

Yeah, Frankie magazine rocks. It has absolutely nothing to do with pregnancy, birth or parenting. Therefore, I love it

Seriously though, I browsed some pregnancy magazines in Borders and found them to be really lacking in substance or intelligence. Just MHO.

I used what to expect when expecting and got lost in all the jargon in it. I found that I used it as a reference if I wanted something specific, but not just as a read. I'm using Kid Wrangling by Kaz Cooke now that DD is here, and its a good laugh with some great points.

While I was pregnant, I also used Cosmo's pregnancy mag. It had week by week ultrasound images and told you just where bub was at. Both me and DH really enjoyed that. I just bought it at the supermarket.
