can I substitute plain flour for self-raising flour?

I'm making buttercake cupcakes, but I've run out of self raising flour. Can I use plain flour instead? Should I add bi-carb? The recipe asks for 2 1/2 cups self-raising flour? If I can use plain flour instead, how much should I use?
    TIA

Not bi carb, baking powder Look on the baking powder packet and see how much to add per cup of plain flour

1 cup plain flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt will get you self raising flour.

My baking powder says 1 cup flour to 2 tsp baking powder...
    Hope your cupcakes tasted good!
