I want to prep Nina (almost 4) for when I go into labour, just in case it happens during the day. So far, I've taught her how, when and why to ring 000, I've taught her our address and I've taught her where dh's work number is on the phone speed dial. I've gone through birth montages and videos with her and she understands how a baby is born. But now I need to get into the gory stuff with her. Like the pain, the bleeding etc. What you recommend I say to her? I don't want to sugarcoat it. With my previous labours, they've started with a massive bang! No small lead up at all, so I need to prepare for that as well.
Any tips would be muchly appreciated
watching the nature shows where live births are filmed might be a good way to introduce her to the gory stuff. It might be easier to get some doco's from the video store. We had foxtel up until recently and saw a lot of births on there. One recent one was of a giraff giving birth and there was a big explosion of afterbirth with was pretty gross to watch....much worse though was seeing a lion take the newborn.
I think the scariest thing for little kids would be to hear their mum in pain but the good thing about animal births is there isnt much screaming involved.
I agree Peg, I know as soon as Nina sees me in pain she's going to be worried. Which is why I want to try and prepare her as much as possible. I might have a look around the video store for a birth movie or something. As she doesn't go to kindy and is with me 24/7, there is a high chance she'll see me in labour (unless it all happens at night, lets hope hey!).
Thanks
