Ondansetron/Zofran Safe for Morning Sickness (1st Trimester)

    Hello Everyone

anyone took ondansetron/zofran during first trimester without any complications with baby? I took 8mg 10 wafers for 5 consecutive days but I stopped taking it because Ian worried it may have complications on my baby.

Please share your experience with this drug and enlighten me. Thanks a lot!

Ondansetron (Category B1) is safe in pregnancy and one of the alternative medications to manage morning sickness. It isn't Category A because you are not ethically permitted to test drugs on pregnant women. However, it is well recognised within the literature as an option.

A 2004 study states "This drug does not appear (although the sample size is limited) to be associated with an increased risk for major malformations above baseline"

    BJOG. 2004 Sep;111(9):940-3.

This article Australian Family Physician Vol. 36, No. 9, September 2007 may give you alternative options for management too.

    hi Monette,

I took zofran for the first few months of my pregnancy and so far no complications with my baby. I'm due in August. My dr said it was safe to be prescribed during pregnancy.

They are safe to take in pregnancy and much more effective than maxolon. Although they can be expensive

I've been taking them and they are the only thing keeping me going - although take some fibre with them as they are good at clogging everything up!!!

I took them thorughout the second half of first trimester and most of second trimester, i was prescribed 8mg but only took half a wafer at a time, there was no way I would have survived without them!

Another one here! I took them from 10 weeks till 26 weeks, once every day. No problems with our DS. I found they are cheaper if you buy them in ten packs, if your GP prescribed them in 10s. Also it's worth shopping around for the best price, a ten pack varied by $20 for me!

you poor poor thing being so sick, its really unfair. Please dont beat yourself up about taking these, they are safe. I lived on Zofran wafers from 6 weeks to 20 weeks, mostly 3-4 a day and my little girl is living proof that all is well with what I did. But I do understand that you are concerned I felt incredibly guilty too, but hun, its all good and without them you wont be well enough to be healthy. Hoping your sickness ends soon x

Meant to add: whilst it didnt stop my throwing up it did reduce it.
