Question Using Bicarb instead of detergent?

I have been having lots of probs with smells on my HipHip Baby Wonderoos. Not a bad smell but just a whiff on the nappies when washed and as soon as DS has peed on them once the whiff gets stronger. My routine is dry pail, rinse on 30degrees and then wash with 1/2 recommended detergent at 40degrees in my front loader. I stripped them using vinegar and dishwashing liquid and a 60degree wash and many rinses but the smells never really disappeared. I was beginning to think it was just the smell of PUL but noticed it was the terry inserts that smelt as well on their own. (I haven't had a problem yet with my Motherease One Size nappies but I haven't been using them as long)

Anyway today while doing a strip wash again, I decided to use bicarb instead of detergent as I use bicarb for lots of cleaning (even my hair!!!) and the smells have disappeared. I think I want to ditch the laundry detergent completely and just use bicarb instead. Does anyone use bicarb instead of laundry detergent regularly? My brief research has revealed it may wear the elastic....does anyone have any experience of this? Thanks in anticipation!!

nope and I use plain bicarb. Even use it on regular laundry on occasion. Works wonders for the smell
So does sun. I know you guys don't get a whole lot over there, but even a day outside on an airer makes a whole world of difference.
