    Paying for the dating scan?

So.. Why do some people have to pay for the dating scan and some don't?

I had a health care card and had my first 2 scans bulkbilled because of it. With DD I had a dating scan and that practice said the first scan was bulk billed but anything after that had to pay for. No idea why.

I have always had to pay for all my scans in the past. I always go to an Ob's room who employs a sonographer to do the scans. The Ob isn't the OB I go to but she does the referrals and the results get sent to her pretty much straight away. I'm sorry but that hasn't really answered your question has it.

My GP referred me to a clinic who just happened to be a bulk billing practice. First time I had ever heard of that! She said a certain amount of scans are bulk billable although not the NT scan. I am quite stoked to have found this clinic as they said if I have referrals from a specialist (being my ob) they can bulk bill nearly all my scans. I need quite a few to keep an eye on my cervix so I am cheering! Last time it cost us a fortune for all the scans. Worth it of course
So, in answer to your question I have no idea why some can bulk bill and some don't!

I don't have a healthcare card, went through SKG.

Think it was about $134 and some of that is recouped as a rebate from medicare - I still haven't taken the receipt in so I can't tell you how much though sorry!
So only some out of pockets here (after rebate)

I think if you go through a public hospital, then it is all covered by Medicare, but I didn't want to wait that long lol

I wasn't charged with FS cause she routinely does it to make sure everything is fine before referring to hospital or OB... Not sure why people have to pay for dating ones though :s

Not necessarily...I had to pay for my dating scan and I went through the midwife clinic attached to the public hospital. Although I think I might have actually got the referral for the scan from my GP because the clinic refuses to see anyone before about 10/12 weeks. Did get some back from Medicare though. It all seems so long ago now!

Apart from my first scan with DD, I had the rest of mine through the ultrasound department at KEMH and didn't pay a cent

The sonographer was the one determining if the scan was 'necessary' when I had my early scans, also at the NT scan. Due to losses in the past I did not have to pay for them and they billed Medicare.

The place where I am going is normally bulk billed but I'm getting charged $150. I'm a bit ****ty seeing other people not having to pay for it and I do. In a way iykwim

It just depends on where it gets done I guess. Just like there are bulk billing GPs and ones who aren't. I got my scans organised by my GP, had to pay for them but got just under half back from Medicare.

How odd, are you going through a private OB?

sometimes scans re a medical necessity and sometimes they are requested...I think that makes a difference.
Then there is where you choose to go. Going to the local public hossy generally doesn't cost if it's a medical scan whereas a private clinic usually always charges,

I was only permitted to have two scans for each pg - a dating scan, and the 20-wk scan. Upon getting a referral from my GP, who only refers to the Mater, I was told I had to pay $320 for each scan (although first time around I got it for $27 thanks to my HCC, although I nearly didn't get it at concession price because my GP 'failed to specify why I needed one' on the referral and they had to do a bunch of last-minute faxes to get what they needed), and would not get anything back from Medicare. If I wanted cheaper scans (as I didn't have my HCC with DD2), I had to go to the local ER and wait for an appt with a doctor who could confirm my pg and get me set up for antenatal appts with the midwives so that *they* could refer me, and even then I couldn't get my dating scans through them as they didn't see me before I had a huge tummy and was waddling everywhere.

Nope from the gp. The referral he gave me, the place only does them for people who come through emergency etc. It says us-obstetric. I wanted it because I concieved on clomid

My GP said you normally have to pay unless you have a 'reason'
on my form she wrote 'confimation of dates due to erratic periods since coming off depo'
lol she gave me the option of which place i wanted to go to aswell
