Potty Training: Is this normal or is my 2.5 yr old just not ready yet?
Hi all, hoping to get some thoughts from a few of you wise women who have been through this before because I haven't got a clue, lol!
We started potty training three days ago and my 2.5yr old DD is quite happy trying, and very pleased with herself when she gets a wee in the potty but more often than not she wees a bit before she realises she needs to go to the potty.
Also she has times through the day where she runs to the potty every few minutes with little or nothing coming out then shortly thereafter she does a big wee on the floor.
So does all this mean she maybe doesn't have the ability to recognise when she needs to go yet? Or is this just how they learn?
I'm totally clueless! I don't think I have ever felt this out of my depth with parenting stuff before
TIA

My DD1 went through that when we started TT. It sounds like she's doing a great job actually if she's starting the wee and then realizing enough to stop and then finish on the toilet! That's great! Lots of accidents are very normal in the beginning. Keep up the good work!
Trial and error - sounds like our method too DS always argues about going on the potty - except when we were camping and it was a big adventure to go to the toilet, then he actually asked to go. I don't think he can tell when he needs to wee yet either. I figure eventually he'll figure it out - once he's wet himself often enough...
Anyway, he sits there and wees & poos if he needs to, but we have to time it more or less or he'll just wet his pants. Then he comes and asks for the potty.... I guess eventually he'll work out how to ask before hand.
I think we *might* have had a break through tonight... I was in another room and she yelled out "mama I did it" and she had taken herself to the potty, done a big wee with no dribbles anywhere! It was the first time she went without telling me and without any mess so proud! hope it's not a one off though... we'll see!
That's great! One of mine didn't TT til just before he turned 4! It really does just 'click' one day for them.
I found at the start that constant reminders helped, like asking every hour if he needed to go. And then with an accident saying 'ah well, next time you can wee in the toilet. So where will you wee next time?' Nothing like a bit of good old fashioned brain washing.
It sounds like she is on the right track, even those times where she runs in and out but wees on floor says she knows she needs to go but think they don't always easily relax to let go while on the potty. Plus them being such busy things they don't always realised they need to go til last min, we had alot accidents right outside the toilet door, just didn't quite make it.
And yay on her taking herself! Thats an excellent sign!
Just to follow up, one week on and she has the hang of it now. It took three days of weeing everywhere in the beginning but by the end of the third day she had it!
Good luck to anyone else in the same boat who might stumble upon this
