    and so it nears again

the time of year where i completely breakdown and just after i start to get over that bam its xmas and i start all over again, anyway this isnt a feel sorry for me thread more of a give me some ideas thread.
My sons 8th birthday is in 3 days and although he only lived 3 hours we still celebrate every year (which i got told i was stupid for by FIL who you would think would be understanding his eldest passed away at 7 months old)

This year we are broke but i still want to do something, i was thinking a picnic lunch at home with a cake but its been raining a lot so wont be able to do a picnic.
Also i try to do something special with all my cakes but generally they turn out a disaster but i have fun trying so any ideas on what theme for my cake and ideas of how to "celebrate" the day - celebrates not the right word i know but cant think of a better one, i usually spend the whole day in hysterics but i dont want that anymore easier said than done i know but I know its not what Anthony would have wanted.

If the cake is a disaster, is making cupcakes a better option? Or cookies?
Maybe the girls could make him cards with coloured paper or finger painting

You can have a picnic at home - just do it in the loungeroom, sitting on a picnic blanket on the floor. You could make a blanket cubby and sit in there. It's the kind of thing an 8 year old boy would enjoy (it's what we used to do as kids)

Or if it's raining, make some paper boats with his name on them, then go and float them in a creek/puddle/dam or whatever (safely of course)

I'll be thinking of you on Saturday and sending happy birthday wishes to your little man.

Oh and to your FIL. Anthony's your son, you can celebrate his birthday however you like.

I agree, you can still have an indoor picnic. 8 is a great number. It has an eternal feel to it, a never ending number IYKWIM. Concentrating on the number can symbolise the never ending love you will always have for your dear Anthony. You could try making a number 8 cake or a plain cake with a big 8 on it.

Big hugs and love to you and your family for Saturday.

Picnic inside? Put a blanket down with pillows and everything, still pack all the food up like it was a picnic.

Hope you had a great 'celebration' for his birthday hun.
FWIW we 'celebrate' my brothers birthday every year.
One year i bought a cake, popcorn and hired kids movies and had a 'party' with some friends (i was like 18 and out of home )
For his 21st we had a dinner with mum and some drinks and every year on his birthday i write him a HAPPY BIRTHDAY status on FB and have some time to myself, my mum has bought some garden ornaments and she has some 'her' time with him in the garden... you never get over it and noone expects you too, my mum is stll a mess over 20yrs on.

Hope you had a great day hun, he would be so so proud of you and so happy you 'celebrate' hm every year!
