    Reflux meds...Somac??

    Hi all,
I have a 6 week old son who has been prescribed Somac granules for his reflux. Has anyone heard or used these, as i see most people are on Losec. Will be starting him on them later in the week as need to take the script to the pharmacy today and it needs to be ordered in (country towns!).
Thanks in advance for any replys or advice xx

I was on Somac in conjunction with some fairly strong anti-inflammatory pills a while back. My understanding of their function is that they inhibit the actual production of the acid in the stomach by counteracting the functioning of the glands that produce the acid. The way a regular antacids work is that it dilutes the acid once it is already produced (i.e. it alkalinises it). I asked the chemist this very question and that is what he told me. Please, anyone else feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

LIG thanks for that explanation. My DS was on Mylanta, then progressed to Zantec, then progressed to Losec and now is on Somac. I am not sure if its helping, but he is not sick anymore. Endoscopy show he still has red, inflamed spots and two ulcers in his small intenstine. Biopsy confirmed CMV virus in his small intestine... they are just keeping the acid controlled and will see if this has been rectified in 8 months time on its own.
