Bassinet after a cesarean or straight into crib? Please help me make up my mind.

I say straight into crib then after some reading or watching one of those babies show..
I am starting to agree with DH that maybe a bassinet would be helpful.

What did you do? What was easier?

Not too certain if I will be bf or not at this point.

I've had a cot next to my bed with all 4 of mine, but never had a c/s.
You can have the base of the cot raised to bassinette height & I don't put the side up just yet. Its high enough that she won't roll out (she doesn't roll around yet anyway), but low enough for easy access.
I also have it close enough to my bed that I stand up, pick her up & lay back down again. I don't have to walk between my bed & the cot.

I never saw the point in having a bassinette that you can only use for a few months. But then, I never in my wildest dreams thought I would have 4 children!

I have decided to go with a bassinett first. I had so much trouble bending to lower my son when he was sleeping, and picking him up that I think it will make life a little easier for a couple of months. Most are also portable which is a bonus.

I'd go for the basinette because they are generally higher than the cot so there is not as much bending over - which I assume could be difficult for a c/s wound in terms of soreness. Plus my basinette had castor wheels on it so I could wheel it around the house which meant I didn't have to carry bubs as often if I didn't want to - again something that could be of benefit to a c/s mum?

I would say bassinette too as I had a c/s last time and bubs went into the higher bassinette and it was so much easier to get her in and out.

We had a wooden cradle on casters which was brilliant - the baby would sleep right next to the bed and DP could get up at night to hand bubs to me for a feed and then do a nappy change without me having to get out of bed or lift anything. It was such a big help! Plus as Trill said, I could move the baby around in it to where I was in the house during the day so some sleeps were in the lounge, some in the bedroom. My DD1 was a little baby and she was in the cradle for about 5 months, DD2 was not so small but still lasted 4 months so it was defeinitely worth it.

I had a cot for MJ, i want planning on a c/s but ended up with one.
I cant say that i had any trouble at all putting her down or picking her up at any point.
We had a Cot that had an adjustable height so it was not on the lowest setting.

I will be doing the same this time around, regardless of whether i get my VBAC or end up with a c/s

    Hope this helps

I had a bassinet but DD ended up co-sleeping with us after night 2 anyway. I actually recovered pretty well from my c-section so bending wasn't a problem. Although you may find it a bit sore, it might not be the huge problem that you think it will

Hehe, the pain relief they give you is pretty good. I was lying in bed just imagining myself springing out of bed when they took my catheter out. I have to say, it was sorer than I thought BUT that only lasted a day and when you're in hospital, the bassinets are just the right height to manage yourself. Just make sure and take it easy when you're in hospital - let the nurses help you!

    Good luck!

Thanks so much. I am already speaking to my OB about pain relief right now as the idea of a suppository worries me. Will let the nurses do as much as they can! I am soaking up all the advice I can atm. Thanks. : )

I 2 c-secs and had a bassinette, but that was more for ease of moving bub around through the day/night while they were asleep.

The 2nd time, I raised the cot base, which also didn't require too much bending over.

I've used a bassinette for all my bubs - c-section or VBAC.

Oh, and I never had suppositories either for pain relief, just normal old drugs taken orally

Ive had 2 c/s, both times that put a supossitory there straight after c/s but that is all,the rest of pain relief is taking orally. There are some threads in the c/s support section that I have posted in and others about tips on dealing with c/s, ie, walk as soon as you can and be mobile etc. I dont know how to post links in here but maybe someone else can?

Ive done both, cot (with my first) and bassinet (with my 2nd child), I have to say bassinet was so much easier as it was at my height and no bending to get the baby out, also so handy to rock them to sleep while laying down right next to your bed.

    bedside crib

Have you thought about using a bedside crib? It goes next to your bed at the same height as your mattress and you won't have to get up and down at all. it's great for after caesareans. It lasts until baby is 30lbs as well which is longer than a bassinet which you should only use until baby is four months old.
