Eczema in baby.... something I'M eating?

    Hey guys,

Was at my MG today and one of the ladies there pointed out that DD looks like she might have a bit of eczema. I had noticed this before but it seemed particularly bad today.

Did I read somewhere that it is something that I'm eating which is being passed through my breast milk or did I dream that? If so, which foods are known triggers?

I'd hate to think that there was something I was eating that would make this a problem for DD.

    Thanks
    Sue x

My little one has mild eczema and has had for awhile. Keeping the skin moisturised helps. Don't know about food triggers, but i know her Dad had eczema as a child and it can be inherited.

We are having trouble with eczema here too. I was thinking the banana bread I ate yesterday might've made it worse, but i think its mostly the heat.
Be careful what you moisturise with. Some can make it worse & cause pain. Avoid soaps & washing powders if you use them.
Hope it gets better soon x

To the contrary, your breastmilk is preventing your baby's eczema, not causing it. I'm thinking your child is on solids now? If it is food related you will possibly something she is eating - not something you are eating! Many children who have excema have no symptoms while they are fully breastfed. So be assured that your are offering your baby the best protection you can

Just a thought. Maybe whatever you wash bub's clothes/bedding in? I know I had eczema as a kid and even now I have to be so careful what I do our washing in. I cant use things like huggies fabris softner or washing powders as I find they 'stay' in the clothes and irritate.

Thanks guys...... you know it could be that we just got new bubble bath - still Johnsons, which is what we were using before but just a different kind. Also I usually have sensitive softner for DDs clothes and didn't have any left so just used the stuff I use for us. Could be that hey?

    Thanks again!

I have heard of mothers having to restrict their diet when breastfeeding, but that is more for severe food allergies rather that eczema causing food intolerances. From personal experience my youngest son had hardly any issue with eczema until I stopped breastfeeding, even when he was consuming the food that we now know he needs to avoid because it makes his skin break out. So I would doubt anything you have eaten has caused this, it is more likely the heat.

    Hey Sue,

Not breastfeeding related at all, but my DSD2 had eczema when she was younger. We had to change the washing powder we used to the 'sensitive' type, and also her body wash - so the bubble bath might be the blame. It still flares up in the heat, so we have a really good quality Sorbalene brand moisteriser and get her to lather herself in it every night.

I hope it clears up soon xo

It flared up yesterday when we were at MG which was outside (in the shade) but it was still really hot. I'll see if I can get my hands on some sensitive baby bath - thanks guys!

Or just use water in the bath and follow up with QV moisturiser.

We have Gaia bath wash (which is great) but most of her baths are just plain water and a face washer.

    Sue,

My DD has had eczema also and what I have found helped was changing our laundry detergent to a Sensitive brand and same with the fabric softener. I use Simple products for washing her body and hair and when she gets out of the shower I cover her in QV lotion. I have found that the combination of all of these things has all but stopped her eczema. I found when she was little and very dribbly from teething she would often get it on her chin and her chest. I would also use a barrier cream (something like what you would use for nappy rash) to try and protect those areas.

I have found keeping her skin moisturised to be so beneficial.

    Good luck - Janie xxx

TBH, I use no powders or soaps at all. Not in the washing with any of DD's stuff & not in the bath.
Goats milk is the only soap I use & its taken the redness out of it.

My gf's son has Eczema and it tends to flarre up when he gets overheated (he does suffer from allergies as well). She ended up changing all his bedding and clothing to cotton & this had a huge effect. She also only baths & misturises him with QV.

My DD never had eczema, but I had it quite severely when younger so I was very careful when DD was a baby. I only used water with some sorbolene in it (same stuff I knew was okay on me) and stayed away from any scented or bubbly bath products at all. I used Lux flakes to wash her clothes and did them separately to ours. I still use the Gaia or similar baby organic bath products, even though DD has never had any sign of eczema or allergies. it stays that way.
