Can you create a bad sleeper?

    Hi Ladies,

I'm expecting my first child and at only 12 weeks I am already feeling the pressures of making the right choice for my baby! Just chasing some advice, as this is going round and round in my head!

Trying to decide whether I need a capsule/travel system for the car. My issue with it is - by not disturbing your baby when transferring from the car are you creating bad habits and possibly a bad sleeper? I hear a lot about "make sure you make noise whilst the baby's sleeping so that they are used to it" etc. Has anyone got any advice to offer in regards to this?

    Thanks in advance!

I think they are either a good sleeper or a bad sleeper and there's not much you can do about it lol!

With respect to moving them from the car, DD would always stay asleep as long as we hadn't been in the car longer than 20minutes. However, with DS, until recently, he would always wake up whenever we moved him out of the car and wouldn't go back to sleep.

    :yeahthat:

we didn't have a capsule & i don't think we needed one as such. if you didn't want to buy both or invest in a capsule, you could always hire one - i know a couple of people who did that & were pretty happy with them. saved actually buying one.

    and congrats on your PG

Well if you can I'm really sucky at this mummy gig....lol just kidding.
I've never had a capsule so can't really offer any advice, but The whole parenthood concept is fraught with these decisions and the guilt that we often drag along with it. I totally understand your stress having been exactly the same, but change a baby you cannot, so my best advice is just listen to your heart and go with baby's flow.....

Just remember a capsule is only good for up to 6 months, after that you need a seat anyway so in some cases just getting a seat is more practical...

I find if DD has only been asleep for a short time in the carseat she'll only half wake up when I get her out and then she'll go back to sleep once she's in my arms or the pram. I've heard of people being very happy with hired capsules too but have also heard you shouldn't let bub sleep too long in them because of the angle their spine is on in them.

if you feel that you want a capsule, then get one, if you dont think of it as "needed" then dont worry about it.
all kids are difrent, ive always used the reversible car seats, birth up, sometimes we could move them out of the car and they would stay asleep or stirr and be settled again, othertimes they would wake and be up. even now they are the same at 5, 3 & 1, sometimes they will stay asleep when taken out the car, sometimes they wont.

always go with what works for you, and what you are comfortable with. not everything works for everyone, babies and kids are no exception either!

We hired a capsule so as not to interrupt sleep. Makes no difference, because as soon as you shut the car door she wakes up. And has only fallen asleep in it twice in her 9 weeks of life anyway.
We made all the noise in the world in her first three weeks, but it did nothing, and now for some sleeps we have to tiptoe or deal with a very cranky little lady.

i have worked in childcare and as a night nanny. I've seen hundreds of different strategies and employed everything I know to create the best sleep habits I can. And I still have a shocking sleeper.

So I wouldn't worry about it. Hire a capsule if you're unsure, and make the decision later. That's what we did.

As someone else mentioned above, you aren't suppose to keep babies in capsules for more than 2 hours at a time if you can help it as it's bad for their spine...so at some point, you'd want to move them anyway (although there are times when we have found our capsule to be very convenient - but more for us than DS).

I really don't think you can create a bad sleeper. I've got 3 boys my first was hard to get to sleep, didn't sleep through the night until he was about 2 spent a lot of nights in bed with me. Once he was asleep he slept through pretty much any noise.
My second was awesome from day one, self settled, slept anywhere, and slept through anything.
This one, my third, is terrible still wakes between 5 and well I don't count any more through the night and wakes at the slightest sound, a light switch, door knob squeaking. I always have music playing in the room while he sleeps so that other noises around the house aren't so apparent to him.
I honestly think they are what they are

I'm also with the others about capsules, it's best not to leave them in too long anyway, it's not just thier little developing spines, but their heads. They can end up with flat spots and become a funny shape from lack of head movement.
