How freaking great homemade bread is!!!!!?????????
So I'm taking steps to downsize and reduce our loading on our wallets, and one of the things that hadn't made it to our list until this year was to make our own bread. I have a bread machine, gained from putting a call out on FB to anyone who had one sitting in the back of their cupboard and last week took the plunge and made my first ever loaf of bread!
It's SSSSOOOOOOO easy!!! Especially with the breadmaker!
Today I took a jump and decided to try bread rolls....the jump is letting the machine make the dough and me learning the basics of rising and baking.
They worked!!! Okay, so my oven is not the best and they're a little dark on the bottom, but would you believe that with an ordinary white bread recipe they taste so sweet and lovely that I would give up scones for the rest of my life just to eat these rolls!!!! Butter and Vegemite and I am restraining myself from eating any more!!!
The best thing is, I have made 15 bread rolls for about $2.
In the maker now is my attempt at making cinnamon and sultana bread. Can't wait to taste the results!!!
*drools* ooh yum... Might have to get myself a breadmaker... I remember mum making it and leaving it to rise in front of the heater on cold days. It made the house smell soo good.
Mmm my mum has a breadmaker, we used to have homemade bread all the time but she doesn't use it. You've inspired me, I'm going to borrow it. How much does it cost you to buy the ingredients?
oooo Babyluv, I very much encourage you to try it!!! We started off just buying the packet mixes in the supermarket aisle. I don't know how much you usually pay for bread a week, but we paid quite a bit as we don't eat white bread and like it 'heavy'. A four loaf box of wholegrain german grain bread mix costs about 8 dollars, and it's a 'just add water' affair.
The things I'm cooking now are all with basic cooking ingredients that I already have i.e. flour, marg, sugar PLUS bread improver and yeast. It takes about 3 cups of flour to make a white loaf, so a 1kg bag will do 2 loaves. (or 30 rolls!) The yeast and bread improver are in the cooking section of the supermarket and about $2 each, but there's HEAPS in each.
I'm very much looking forward to making cinnamon rolls and hot cross buns!!!!
I looooove my bread maker too. I don't have time at the moment, but I will come back and post a recipe I use for Chocolate Chip Hot Cross Buns - they are delicious and a lot cheaper than $5 for 6 that you pay at Woolies. I made them last Easter instead of buying some - they were a huge hit!
I also use my bread maker to make pizza dough. My dough recipe makes two bases so I use one fresh and freeze the other (on a pizza tray) for when I need to make something quick for dinner. Waaaaaaaaay cheaper than bought ones.
There was a crumpet recipe thread floating around yesterday and I posted the recipe for crumpets that I make in my bread maker in that thread too.
Ask around Tali! In 5 mins on FB I had one from a friend who just had it sitting in their cupboard gathering dust! Seems lots of people have them and never use them!
OOOOOh JustMe, I'd love to see that recipe!!!! I'm so excited, it's my new novelty that I hope will never wear off!
If you want to be super organised (not that I am), you can pre-make your basic mix into plastic bags, without the liquid and yeast of course, so all you have to do is pour it in.
I think they come in a range from 750g loaf size up to a 1.5kg loaf. Mine is a 1kg size. I also bought a bread slicing guide cause I can never cut bread straight
